Biography

Edward Thomas Winters
(1888-1966)
Edward Thomas WINTERS was born on 10 March 1888 in Upper Sunville, Co. Limerick, IrelandG.3 He married Sarah Frances MEREDITH, daughter of Thomas MEREDITH and Rebecca STRONG, on 22 April 1914 in Parish Church of St Michael (Church of Ireland), AthyG.4 Edward Thomas WINTERS died on 21 February 1966, at age 77, in London, EnglandG.
Edward Thomas Winters was recorded on the 1901 census in the household of Andrew Winters in Upper Sunville, Co. Limerick, Ireland, and was described as Edward Winters, son, Church Ireland, able to read & write, aged 13, a scholar, not married, born in Co Limerick.

He was enumerated in the 1911 Ireland census as a Shop Assistant, aged 23, living at Market Street, Kells Urban, Co. Meath. The shop was a Provision Merchant and Iron Monger. The household members were: Joseph H Hamilton, 46, Head, Letitia Hamilton, 43, Wife, Henry James Hamilton, 12, Son, Elinor Letitia Hamilton, 8, Daughter, Leslie Gertrude Hamilton, 6, Daughter, Dorothy Josephine Hamilton, 4, Daughter, Edward Winters 23, James Smith, 20, Assistant, Harold Mellor, 17, Assistant, George Foley, 15, Assistant, Minnie Jenkins, 21, Assistant, Margaret D'Arcy, 18, Assistant, Ellen Mc Cabe, 20, Servant Maid (Servant), Patrick Flynn, 40, Servant Man (Servant).

The Hamiltons may have been relations of the Winters family. A photo of a Major Hamilton describes him as a cousin of Margaret Susan 'Gretta' Winters, a half-sister of Edward Thomas Winters. His older brother Frederick George Winters also worked as an assistant in the Hamilton's shop in Kells in 1901.

He was living at St. Michael's Terrace, Athy, Co. Kildare in 1914 and 1917, Ireland, where he was a Salesman, probably working for Duthie, Large & Co who were engineers and motor agents.

He was appointed a churchwarden for the Athy and Kilberry Union of Parishes in 1920.

The family was caught up in the general unrest of the Irish Civil War. An edition of the Nationalist and Leinster Times of Saturday, July 01, 1922; pg. 2, reported that:
"On Monday night the windows of house in St. Michael's Terrace, occupied by a Protestant, were broken by stones. The house of Mr. Winter, a Protestant worker engaged in the Foundry was attacked by a number of men also on Monday night. Stones were thrown at the windows. Mr. Winter did not comply with their requests and after remaining for a short time they left."

The family moved to Galway between 1922-1923 where Edward Thomas Winters was manager of WP Higgins Garage, a Ford Dealership. They were living at 8 Dominick street, Galway in 1929. A number of newspaper articles referring to him and his work at Higgins Garage can be found here:
Newspaper Clippings.

In February 1941 he was living at 'Winterville', Taylor's Hill, Galway, before moving to England later that year.
