James ROBINSON![Robinson Family Line](../ui/tree-brown.jpeg)
M, #687, b. about 1849, d. May 1915
Parents
Biography
James ROBINSON was born about 1849 in Monivea, Co. Galway, Ireland
G. He married
Henrietta PAUL on 11 August 1875 in Wadsley Parish Church, Yorkshire
G. He died in May 1915, at age ~66. He was buried on 15 May 1915 in St. Peter’s Churchyard, Woodmansterne, Surrey
G.
1 He was an Attendant at Durham Co, Asylum in 1881, living at 8 Asylum Cottages, Sedgefield. He was described as a Night Attendant on the Insane in the 1891 census, living at 13 St. Dunstans Cottages, Woodmansterne, Croydon. He was described as a Professor of Music in 1899 on his daughter Henriett’s marriage certificate. The 1901 census describes him as Attendant on the Insane living at 32 St. Dunstans Cottages, Woodmansterne. His address in 1911 was 1 Woodbine Cottage, Woodman Road, Coulsdon, Surrey, and he was a Civil Service Pensioner. The same address was given on his burial record.
There are a number of reasons for assuming that James was a son of James Robinson and Ellen Fitzpatrick, in the absence of a birth or baptism record:
- the 1911 England census gives his place of birth as Monivea (although it is a little difficult to read), where other children are known to be born
- his father was named as James Robinson a “Police Inspector” on his marriage certificate. The occupation is not exactly right but perhaps near enough
- an Ellen Robinson aged 21, born in England, was enumerated in the 1901 Ireland census in the household of Susan Robinson (the youngest child of James Robinson and Ellen Fitzpatrick) at the Woodlawn Post Office in Co. Galway, and described as a niece. She is almost certainly the daughter of James and Henrietta born in 1878 in Surrey
- a Nellie Robinson was the informant of James Robinson Senior’s death at Woodlawn in 1899, again almost certainly the daughter of James and Henrietta
- Henrietta Robinson, the daughter of James and Henrietta was living at Woodlawn at the time of her marriage in 1899 to John McNally at Kilconnell Church of Ireland.

Although we have no record of his baptism, James is believed to belong to this family group, as no other family is known that matches the details on his two marriage certificates of age, father and residence. The R.I.C. service records of his sons Thomas and John also mention family connections in Co. Limerick. He named his children in a very similar manner to his brother George, indicating that they both used the Irish naming convention.
