Parents

FatherThomas BEATTY b. about 1810, d. 29 March 1864
MotherEliza KELLY d. before March 1864

Biography

Joseph Samuel BEATTY was born about 1859 in Kilkenny/WaterfordG.1 He was baptised on 17 June 1859 in Inistioge, Co. KilkennyG.2 He married Ellen Anne ROBINSON, daughter of James ROBINSON and Ellen FITZPATRICK, on 15 September 1888 in Kilconnell, Co. Galway, IrelandG.3 Joseph Samuel BEATTY died on 19 May 1927, at age ~68, in 24 North Street, Downend, Mongotsfield, EnglandG.4
Joseph Samuel Beatty was orphaned by the age of 4, and it is not known who brought him up. He served as a Constable in the Royal Irish Constabulary, having enlisted on 18 August 1881. He was aged 22 at the time, and described in the records as 5' 8¾" in height, a Laborer, native county Kilkenny/Waterford, and a Protestant. The recommendation was provided by sub-inspector Webb, who was based in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny in 1881; this is likely to have been the area in which Joseph Beatty was living.

He was posted to Co. Galway ER, on 8 January 1882, where he served until his retirement in 1921. He was recorded in various records as resident in New Inn, Co. Galway in 1888 and 1890, Ballygar, Co. Galway in 1892, and Woodford, Co. Galway in 1893.

He was recorded in the 1911 census at Cross Street, Athenry, and described as head of household, Irish Church, aged 49, Constable R.I.C., born in Co. Kilkenny. He was enumerated with his wife Ellen (aged 50) and daughter Vera E. (aged 19). The house was on the same street as the RIC barracks. He was still living at Cross Street, Athenry, Co. Galway in 1915. His service record notes that he had family connections with other RIC members in Waterford, Tipperary, Sligo, Clare and Mayo.

He was discharged from the Royal Irish Constabulary on 1 July 1921 and received a pension of £164-13-4.

The Weekly Irish Times reported on 17 June 1922 that their house in Athenry had been machine-gunned:
“There was heavy machine gun and rifle fire at Athenry a few nights ago, when a number of houses occupied by ex-R.I.C. men were fired into. The ex-policemen had got warning to leave the town, but some declined to do so. At about midnight a group of men, with rifles and a machine gun, came into the town and opened fire on the house of ex-Constable Beatty, who has since left. Sergeant McGovern lived in the same house.”

He emigrated with his wife to England in 1922, their address in 1927 being 24 North St., Downend, Mangotsfield, England.5,6,7,8

Biography

Ellen Anne Robinson
(1859-1945)
Ellen Anne ROBINSON was born on 26 October 1858 in Co. Galway E., IrelandG.1 She was baptised on 18 December 1858 in Athenry, Co. GalwayG.2 She married Joseph Samuel BEATTY, son of Thomas BEATTY and Eliza KELLY, on 15 September 1888 in Kilconnell, Co. Galway, IrelandG.3 Ellen Anne ROBINSON died on 4 December 1945, at age 87, in 21 Westbourne Avenue, Harrogate, EnglandG.4
Born in Athenry in 1858, Ellen Anne Robinson was resident in Woodlawn, Co. Galway, Ireland at the time of marriage in 1888. According to family tradition, she would talk about "Lady Anne" back in Ireland - this is likely to have been Lady Anne Trench of Woodlawn House, Co. Galway.
Woodlawn post office, where her father was postmaster, was adjacent to Woodlawn House.

She was enumerated in the 1901 census in Main Street, Eyrecourt, Co. Galway with her three surviving children. She was enumerated in the 1911 census at Cross Street, Athenry, in the household of Joseph Beatty, and is recorded as having had 4 children, with 2 still living at that date.

The Tuam Herald reported on 1 July 1922 that she had warned to leave the district within seven days:
“Mrs Beatty, wife of Constable Beatty, who left Athenry a short time ago, got a notice warning her to leave the district within seven days. The notice was typewritten and signed the "Competent Military Authority," and bore the Galway postmark. She consulted the local authorities about the matter, but they had no knowledge of it. Mrs Beatty is a native of Athenry and all her life has lived in the same house there.”
This was after the house had already been machine-gunned earlier in June that year.

She emigrated to England later in 1922 with her husband.1,5,6,7

Biography

Thomas BEATTY was born about 1810 in Co. Longford, IrelandG. He married Eliza KELLY, daughter of Edward KELLY and -?-, on 1 June 1850 in Kilbeacon Church of Ireland, Co. Kilkenny, IrelandG.1 Thomas BEATTY died on 29 March 1864, at age ~54, in Listerlin, Co. Kilkenny, IrelandG.
Thomas Beatty began his service with the Royal Irish Constabulary on 8 April 1831. He was aged 21 at the time, and described as 6’ 0” in height, native county of Longford, a Protestant, no previous trade. He was recommended by Capt. Robinson.

He was transferred to Co. Kilkenny, Ireland, on 1 November 1833, and was living in Listerlin Barracks, Ireland at the time of his marriage in 1850. His father’s name was left blank on the marriage certificate, so he may have been illegitimate, with his mother’s name being Beatty.

His death certificate notes that he was a widower, and died of paralysis (the RIC record gave the cause of death as Apoplexy). A gratuity of £31-12-6 was paid to his family following his death in service in 1864. He had served for 32 years and 11 months.2
