John Barrer was unmarried. He emigrated from Ireland to Australia on the ship Joseph Soames, as an Assisted Emigrant, arriving in New South Wales on 1 Feb 1852. He was described on the passenger list as a farm labourer from Killfinnan [sic], Co. Limerick, Ireland. The entry made by the Immigration Board on 3 Feb 1852 records his parents as Thomas [Barrer] and Jane Hoare, both dead, and a payment by him of £2. It notes that he had no relatives in the Colony at the time.
He was recorded in the Immigration Deposit Journals for New South Wales as having paid £12 on deposit for the emigration of John Smith (aged 24), Thomas Smith (aged 22) and James Smith (aged 20). The transaction was recorded in the Colonial Treasurer’s report for 20 Apr 1853. John Smith and Thomas Smith received embarkation orders to join the ship Rodney in 1854, and they arrived in New South Wales on 15 Mar 1854. The passenger list notes that John Barrer was living in Sydney at the time. The deposit journal of 10 Jul 1854 notes that £4 was to be returned to him in respect of James Smith, who did not travel with his brothers.
John Barrer moved some time after 1854 to the State of Victoria where he worked as a miner in Ararat. The informant of his death was his nephew John Smith.3,4,1

Moved to Knoxville 16 or 17 years ago, then to Peoria where lived number of years. Last fall returned to Knoxville. Her disease was cancer of the tongue. Two weeks ago she left Oneida, where she had been living with a daughter, Mrs. John White, and went to Iowa. The journey weakened her and she steadily failed up to her death. The remains were brought here Sunday morning and the funeral held at the Catholic church. Father Haney of Galva conducted the service. The deceased was an old resident of this village, moving here about 35 years ago. Survivors, three children. Joseph of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mary White of Oneida, Thomas of Galesburg. All present at her funeral.

Her obituary appeared on 23 March 1899 in the newspaper The Galesburg Daily Republican Register, as follows:
“DEATH OF MRS JOHN WHITE Mary A. Barrer was born in Baltimore Md., on October 18, 1852. She was the eldest daughter of Thomas and Nora Barrer, now deceased. When but a child her parents moved to Wataga, Ill., making that their home for a number of years. She was married to John White on July 1, 1875. To this union were born nine children, one dying in infancy and eight surviving, which are Mildred, Janie, Frank, John, Jr., Joseph, Ida, Mary and Isal. These, with the sorrowing husband, mourn her loss. Also four brothers Thomas Barrer, of Galesburg; Henry, of Peoria; Robert, of Victoria, and Joseph, of Mitchellville, Iowa. Early in the winter she suffered with a slight attack of la grippe, which settled into a complication of diseases, which caused her death. She seemed to be gaining in health and all hopes were entertained of her recovery until Sunday when she became gradually worse, dying on Tuesday, March 21, at 1:30 o'clock p.m. The funeral services were held at the residence in Oneida on Thursday, at 10 a.m., Rev. Mr. Graves officiating. The interment was in the Wataga cemetery. Thus another home is broken - mother is gone.”.2,1
