John Barrer began his service with the Royal Irish Constabulary on 8 December 1879. He was transferred to Co. Galway WR, Ireland, on 25 June 1880. He was discharged from the Royal Irish Constabulary on 17 May 1892 after 12 years service.

He was murdered by robbers in 1922.2,3

He was recorded in the 1911 census in his mother’s household at Cappancur, King’s County, Ireland, and was described as Joseph Strong, Irish Church, can read & write, aged 27, farmer, single, born Queen’s County.

He is possibly the Joseph Strong whose death was registered in 1951 aged 70, (Registration district Dublin South, Q3 vol. 2 p. 316).4,5,6

Biography

Thomas BARRER was born on 20 June 1810.1 He was baptised on 15 July 1810 in Kilfinane Church of Ireland, Co LimerickG.2 He married Elizabeth AIREY in 1835.3,4 He married Honora MALONEY, daughter of Patrick MALONEY, on 26 August 1849 in Kilpeacon Church of Ireland, LimerickG.5 Thomas BARRER died on 4 August 1889, at age 79.6 He was buried in Wataga Cemetery, Wataga, Illinois, USAG.7
Thomas Barrer was recorded as a farmer of Ballysimon on the baptismal records of George 1843 and William 1844, and as a herdsman of Rossbrien on the baptismal record of James 1846. Nothing more is known about these 3 children, who appeared not to have emigrated with Thomas and perhaps died young. He emigrated circa 1850 to USA; it is assumed that he emigrated at the same time as his sons Henry and Thomas.

He appeared on the census of 11 July 1870 in Wataga, Knox Co., Illinois, USA, in which he was described as Thomas Barrer, a white male aged 55, a Farmer, a US citizen born in Ireland, with real estate valued at $500 and personal possessions valued $300. He was enumerated with Hanora (wife aged 30), Mary A. (daughter aged 17), Robert (son aged 12), Catherine (daughter aged 8), Joseph (son aged 7) and Michael (son aged 1).

He appeared on the census of 3 June 1880 in Copley, Knox Co., Illinois, USA, in which he was described as Thomas Barrer, a white male aged 70, a farmer, born in Ireland, with both parents born in Ireland. He was enumerated with Hanora (wife aged 40), Robert (son aged 21), Catharine (daughter aged 17), Joseph (son aged 15) and Michael (son aged 10).8,9,10
