John Winter was a farmer and land steward. He was mentioned in papers of the Oliver family of Castle Oliver, Co Limerick, as being a tenant on their estate between 1825 and 1828. His first mention was in 1825 as having arrears of £4-3-0. He was mentioned in 1826 as receiving a half-year's wages of £5-5-0 for "attending to Mr Silver Oliver's Bog" due 1 May 1826.
He was mentioned in 1826 as owing £3-13-10 in March 1826, with the same amount noted as having been received by Mr Riordan, and no arrears from Sept 1825. A half year's rent is recorded as £7-7-8. He was mentioned in 1827 as follows: "Old Winters and his son claims a salary - give what is due to them".
He was mentioned in 1827 as having paid £3-13-10 in rent. A separate entry states that £54-9-9 was received "from John Winter for Turf for the Year 1826".
A John Winter was mentioned in 1828 as holding from 5 to 20 acres and being entitled to one turf ticket. The document identifies the plot with the number 523, the same as the one in the original 1785 lease for Ballintubber. It is unclear whether this refers to his father John Winter (who would have been aged at least 84 in 1828) or to the present John.
He was included in the 1829 Voter Registration list published in the Limerick Chronicle with the following entry: "John Winter of Ballyheen, house and land at Upper Sunville, same townland and barony Costlea, - ten pounds-".
4He was described as a woodranger of Fanningstown in 1830 in an advertisement placed on behalf of the Silver Oliver estate in the Limerick Evening Post.
He was recorded in the Tithe Applotment Book of 1833 in Upper Sunville, Co. Limerick, where he leased just over 27 acres at a rent of £39.
There is no record of his wife's name.
