Joseph Frederick LEDSAM
M, #1806, b. 16 April 1791, d. 28 December 1862
Biography
Joseph Frederick LEDSAM was born on 16 April 1791. He and
Elizabeth Ann Ashton GODDINGTON were married on 4 December 1817 in St Peter and Paul, Aston, Warwickshire.
1 He died on 28 December 1862, at age 71, in Chad Hill, Birmingham.
2 He was buried on 3 January 1863 in Christ Church, New Street, Birmingham.
3 His death was announced in the 30 December 1862 edition of the Birmingham Daily Gazette, transcribed as follows:
"DEATH OF MR. JOSEPH FREDERICK LEDSAM.
We deeply regret to have to record the demise of our respected fellow-townsman, Mr. J. F. Ledsam, which took place at his residence at Chad Hill yesterday (Monday) morning, after a long and painful illness, which he had borne with exemplary fortitude and resignation.
Mr. Ledsam was, we believe, at the time of his death a magistrate for the counties of Warwick, Worcester, and Stafford, and a deputy-lieutenant for one at least of those counties. He was also for many years Deputy-Chairman of the London and North-Western Railway, and Chairman of the Birmingham and Staffordshire Gas Company, also an active Governor of King Edward's School. Amongst many public services for which the town is indebted to him may be mentioned his chairmanship for many years of the Committee of the Birmingham Musical Festivals, which have been in no small degree indebted to his assiduity, courtesy, and judgment, for their eminent success. In him the General Hospital has lost a very active and liberal trustee and member of the committee, and many other public institutions are by his death deprived of a devoted assistant. To the poor he was a liberal though unostentatious friend, and all classes will join in sincerely mourning his decease."
His entry in the National Probate Calendar was as follows:
"LEDSAM Joseph Frederick Esq. 23 February [1863]. Effects under £60,000.
The Will of Joseph Frederick Ledsam late of Chad Hill Edgbaston in the County of Warwick Esquire deceased who died 28 December 1862 at Chad Hill aforesaid was proved at Birmingham by the oaths of Joseph Ledsam of Edgbaston aforesaid Esquire the Reverend Frederick George Ledsam of Edgbaston aforesaid Clerk William Ledsam of Birmingham in the same County Gentleman and James Goddington Ledsam of Edgbaston aforesaid Gentleman the Sons and Charles Couchman of Birmingham aforesaid Land Agent the Executors.”.
