(photo courtesy of Patricia Thompson and Carol Watt)
Vincent Cotterill SCHOLEFIELD was born on 9 October 1840.
1 He and
Annie Sabina ASTON were married on 10 October 1866 in Edgbaston Church, Warwickshire.
2 He died on 4 January 1911, at age 70.
3 He was buried in Ryde Cemetery, Isle of Wight.
He was a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
He was court-martialled in 1863 for an incident aboard the ship Forte at Montevideo, as described in the Naval & Military Gazette and Weekly Chronicle of the United Service 25 July 1863, pg. 6:
“FORTE.-A Court-Martial was held on board the Forte, at Monte Video, on May 19, on Sub-Lieut. V. C. Scholefield, of the Triton. This officer, who was respected by the Commander and officers prior to the circumstances complained of, had been placed under arrest for drunkenness, at 8 p.m. Half an hour afterwards he broke his arrest and went on deck; and going up to Lieut. Kirby, the Commander, asked him if he intended to try him by Court-Martial. Being answered in the affirmative, the prisoner took from his coat pocket a small four-barrelled pistol, saying, " Then I must shoot you." He was easily disarmed, and sent below under close arrest, and a few minutes afterwards was in a sound sleep. The prisoner had nothing to say in his defence, and there seemed no doubt that his conduct was attributable to temporary mental aberration. Lieut. Kirby spoke highly of him, and his shipmates concurred in speaking in his favour. The Court, however, under the circumstances, had no alternative but to find him guilty, and he was sentenced to be imprisoned for two years and to be discharged the Service with disgrace.”
He was recorded in the 1881 Wales Census at Caerlan, Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire, and described as Vincent C. Scholefield, Head, aged 40, No Occupation, born in Birmingham. He was enumerated with his wife Annie S. (aged 38), son Ernest N.M. (aged 8), daughter Florence M. (aged 4) and two servants. Both children were born in Monmouthshire.
He was recorded in the 1891 England Census at Wigginton, Yorkshire, in the household of his uncle James W. Corbett, aged 76, Rector of Wigginton, and described as “living on own means”.
He was recorded in the 1901 England census at 35 Victoria Road, Wood Green, Middlesex, as a visitor in the household of Maria S. Leeson, widow, aged 43.
