Josiah MEREDITH1
M, #53, b. before 1670, d. 1707
Biography
marr 1699 Josiah Meredith - Anne Whitcott
Josiah MEREDITH was born before 1670. He and
Margaret WHETMORE were married on 29 December 1684 in Caynham, Shropshire. He and
Anne WHITCOTT were married on 21 December 1699 in Lingen, Herefordshire.
1,2 He died in 1707. He was buried on 19 March 1707 in Lingen, Herefordshire.
3 According to family tradition, both Josiah and his wife died young, leaving two boys as orphans to be brought up in the charge of their uncle.. It is possible that the uncle was
Ralph Meredith, who was a tenant on the Harley estate at Brampton Bryan.
Josiah’s parents aren’t known. However, a David Meredith of Lingen is listed in the 1665 Herefordshire Hearth Tax transcript, and is highly likely to have been a relative of Josiah, if not his father. Moreover, the Lingen parish register has entries for baptisms to parents David and Olive Meredith in 1664 and 1669, possible parents of Josiah.
The will of Josiah Meredith of Lingen on the County of Hereford [Farmer?] dated 1707 was proved in 1712, with the following details:
- Anne, wife, bequeathed house and backside, lately purchased from John Cooke deceased, and after her decease bequeathed to the survivor of David, John, Thomas, Josiah in that order
- Josiah, eldest son, (sole executor) all other houses and lands in Lingen
- Elizabeth, daughter, £5 to be paid within [10?] years after his decease
- Hannah, daughter, £10 when aged 21
- Hester, daughter, £10 when aged 21
- Mary, daughter, £10 when aged 21
- David, son, £10 when aged 21
- John, son, £10 when aged 21
- Thomas, son, £10 when aged 21
- executor [son Josiah] to provide sufficient maintenance, meat, drink and apparel to Anne and to Hannah, Hester, Mary, David, John and Thomas until those children are 21
Will dated 15 March 1706
Testator buried 19 March 1707
Inventory of goods 26 March 1707 value £47 11s 06d
Probate 13 May 1712 Ludlow.

John MEREDITH
M, #55, b. about 1704, d. before February 1774
Parents
Biography
John MEREDITH was born about 1704. He and
Elizabeth were married. He died before February 1774 in Birmingham, Warwickshire.
1 John Meredith was an Innholder of the New Tavern, Bull Street, Birmingham. The earliest reference to him is in the Gazette of 27 Jan 1745:
“Whereas the Bowling Green of Mr. Meredith, near New Hall, by this Town, was by some malicious Persons dug up in several Places on Wednesday Night last ; this is to give Notice, that whoever will discover the Persons concern'd in so doing, to Mr. Meredith, at the New Tavern in Bull Street, Birmingham, shall receive two Guineas Reward ; or if either of the Persons will discover his Accomplices, so that they be brought to Justice, he shall receive the same Reward, and a free Pardon."
He was Innholder of the New Tavern for at least 27 years. A newspaper report in 1772 announces a meeting of bankruptcy commissioners to be held “at the House of John Meredith, known by the Name of the New Tavern, situate in Bull-Street in Birmingham”, for the purpose of distributing dividends to a bankrupt's creditors. Other such announcements of bankruptcy meetings give the named contact as John Meredith, Attorney-at-Law, so his son was clearly using the Inn for some public business meetings (as was the custom).
John Meredith made a Will dated 20 September 1772 in which he bequeathed (a) a share in “the Navigation” to his son John (using money held by Mr Capper to pay Mr Bentley) and (b) all real and personal estate to be divided equally between his wife and three children John, Sarah and Phebe. The witnesses to the will were Samuel Meredith, Hannah Stephens and Sarah Meredith. Unfortunately he failed to name any executors, which led to some delay in the administration of the estate. In a Court document of 2 Feb 1774 Elizabeth Meredith, “relict of John Meredith late of Birmingham Innholder”, renounced letters of administration. Subsequently, on 9 Jan 1783, his daughter Sarah was required by the Court to make an inventory of the personal estate, her husband Isaac Whitehouse having deposited £500 with the court as escrow. Finally, probate was granted on 11 Jan 1783 at Lichfield Consistory Court.
He is possibly the John Meredith buried on 12 Oct 1772 at Birmingham, St Philip.

Isaac WHITEHOUSE

Biography
Isaac WHITEHOUSE was born about 1724.
1 He and
Sarah MEREDITH were married on 3 January 1760 in Birmingham, St. Philip’s.
2 He died on 17 June 1814, at age ~90.
1 He was buried in St. Philip’s Church, Birmingham.
1 Isaac Whitehouse was described as an Enameller of Birmingham in the Will of his mother-in-law Elizabeth Meredith dated 1790. A 1770 Directory of Birmingham lists an Isaac Whitehouse, Enamel Manufacturer and Japanner, at 36 Bull Street, Birmingham. A Birmingham enameller of that name is credited in 1774 with “an invention of making coat-buttons, breast-buttons, sleeve-buttons, vest, and other buttons, studs, bracelets, necklaces, lockets, rings, watch-chains, boxes, and trinkets”.
The identity of Isaac Whitehouse’s parents is not known. One source that traces the lineage of an American descendant, Edwin Sheldon Whitehouse, names the father as Isaac of Sedgeley who died in 1786. However, this is incorrect, as is clear from the names and relationships mentioned in the will of Isaac of Sedgeley and his brother of John of Coseley, as indexed by the Whitehouse Family History Centre. The lineage is also incorrect in naming the husband of Sarah Meredith as Isaac Meredith of Gravelly Hill (who in fact died ca. 1799 and not 1812 as stated, and whose will is also indexed by the Whitehouse Family History Centre).
