Mary LINWOOD
F, #2403, b. about 1783
Parents
Biography
Mary LINWOOD was born about 1783 in Birmingham, Warwickshire.
In the 1851 census Mary Linwood is enumerated at 23 Hagley Road, Edgbaston, in the household of her sister Sarah. She is described as a shareholder and annuitant, aged 66 and unmarried. She is most likely to be the composer and author who was the niece of her aunt and more famous namesake Mary Linwood, the artist in needlework. She published a book “Leicestershire Tales in 1808 and a poem “Anglo Cambrian” in 1818. She wrote both the music and verse for an oratorio “David’s First Victory” which received its first performance in 1833 at St. Paul’s Chapel, Birmingham, the review stating (in the sentiment of the time) “It is certainly a great work for a female musician, and the first of the kind we remember to have heard of”. It was performed later, in 1840 in London, at the Queen’s concert rooms, Hanover Square. The title page of the music states that the composer is aged 68, presumably as of the date of publication. She also published a number of songs, and two operas by her were left in manuscript.
