2 John Heaton, together with his brothers William, George and Reuben, expanded the button shank manufacturing business that had been established by their father Ralph I at Shadwell Street Mills. Their company was known as Heaton Brothers. The four brothers were granted a patent for a steam-driven carriage in 1830 and formed Heatons' Steam Carriage Company, but development was abandoned in 1834 after disappointing road trials. A directory of 1830 also lists John Heaton as a victualler of 26 Russell Street, Birmingham. The will of John Heaton was dated 9 January 1834 and proved on 24 June 1834. It mentions his wife Mary and his children Alfred (who is bequeathed the Public House in Russell Street), Mary Ann, Caroline, Hannah, Harriet and John.

He was enumerated with Sarah Hunt (unmarried cousin, aged 67, born Rugeley) and a servant.

His descendants in America devoted themselves to a number of evangelical and liberal causes, such as foreign missions, the abolition of slavery, and the emancipation of women.
