4 Thomas Clutton Salt was the son of Joseph Salt and Anne Clutton. It was said in his obituary that on his father's side he was connected with Salt, the Abyssinian traveller, and his mother was lineally descended from Simon de Clutton of Cheshire, born about 1280. His family had settled in France at the beginning of the century but were detained there following the breakdown of the Treaty of Amiens. Around 1810 he managed to escape and make his way back to England.
Thomas Clutton Salt was a lamp manufacturer in Birmingham. As a Chartist he was one of the founder members of the Birmingham Political Union, a driving force behind the Great Reform Act of 1832.
