Samuel HAMMOND
M, #3504, b. about 1740, d. 11 February 1825
Parents
Biography
Samuel HAMMOND was born about 1740.
1 He and
-?- were married. He died on 11 February 1825, at age ~85, in Birmingham Heath.
2 He was buried on 18 February 1825 in St. Mary, Whittall Street, Birmingham.
3 Samuel Hammond was a button maker of Birmingham. He was possibly the Samuel Hammond who was apprenticed in 1754 for 7 years to James Kempson, toymaker of Birmingham.
He was the founder of the firm that later became Hammond, Turner & Sons, which traded under that name for over 180 years. Its name first appears in the records in Wrighton’s triennial directory of 1818, with the description “button makers of Snowhill”. [Note: a website states that the company was founded in 1717, but this may be a typo for 1817.] It continued trading into the 20th century, diversifying into the manufacture of other goods. Its last accounts were filed in 1997 and the company was formally dissolved in 1999.
The origins of the company as button makers was in the business of Samuel Hammond, who was first recorded in the Birmingham directory of Swinney in 1774 as a button maker at 55 Snow Hill. In the 1780 directory of Pearson and Rollason he was recorded as a button maker at 89 Snowhill. Around 1777 he took on an apprentice, John Dickinson aged 15, who impressed him so much that he entered into a partnership with him on completion of the apprenticeship. This would have been around 1784 as the term of an apprenticeship was normally 7 years. By 1801, Chapman’s directory shows the addition of another partner to the firm, which was then called Hammond, Turner and Dickenson, button makers of Snowhill. The additional partner was John Turner, the nephew of Samuel Hammond by the marriage of Samuel’s sister Mary to John Turner (senior). The last reference to the name of Hammond, Turner and Dickenson was in the 1815 Wrightson directory of Birmingham, and sometime between then and 1818 the name of Hammond, Turner & Sons was adopted, most likely in 1816 on the retirement of John Dickenson (who died 5 years later in 1821) and the addition of the sons of John Turner into the partnership.
The company was very successful and it is said that at its peak it was the second largest button maker in Birmingham, employing over 150 staff.
The will of Samuel Hammond was dated 20 Jul 1820 (with four codicils, the last dated 24 May 1822) and proved on 1 Jun 1825. It mentions his late wife without naming her. She was possibly the Ann Pratt who married a Samuel Hammond in 1776 at Holy Trinity, Coventry.
