Ralph Heaton (sometimes referred to as Ralph Heaton II) was a die sinker who worked independently of his father and of the firm of Heaton Brothers run by his four brothers George, John, William and Reuben. “The Clerk reported the death of Mr. Ralph Heaton, for many years a member, and for sometime Vice-Chairman of the Board. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by the Vice-Chairman, the following resolution was passed unanimously: ‘That this Board regrets to hear of the decease of Mr. Ralph Heaton, who for many years filled the office of Guardian of the poor, the duties of which, when in health, he discharged efficiently and conscientiously, and the Board begs to offer to his family its condolence on the occasion.’ There was no other business of public interest before the meeting”.3

He was an Edge Tool Manufacturer. His sister Mary Ann Heaton married his wife’s brother George Turner.
His obituary appeared in The Times on Tuesday, 6 Sep 1904, as follows:
“Mr. GEORGE HEATON died at his residence, Church-hill-road, Handsworth, Birmingham, on Saturday. Mr. Heaton, who was 72 years of age, has suffered from heart trouble during the last few weeks, and, in spite of every attention, failed to rally. He was the son of Mr. Ralph Heaton, the founder of the Birmingham Mint, where he assisted his father. As representative of the firm he spent two years in Italy in connexion with the execution of a contract for fitting up the Italian Mint at Milan. Subsequently he entered into partnership with the late Mr. Thomas Atkins, and carried on the business known as William Hunt and Sons, Brades Steel Works, Oldbury. He retired from the mint about 30 years ago, but was chairman of the Brades Steel Works until his death. Mr. Heaton was a magistrate for Staffordshire and Worcestershire, and took a great interest in magisterial work, sitting at Oldbury and Handsworth. He was regarded as an authority on the licensing question, on which he held strong views. For many years he devoted himself to the public life of Birmingham and the district, being a warm friend of many charitable and philanthropic institutions. When the corporation took over the gas and water undertakings for the benefit of the town Mr. Heaton was prominently concerned in the negotiations on behalf of the water company. “.3
