3 Samuel Aston was a Button Maker and a partner with his brother Thomas in the firm of Samuel and Thomas Aston of St. Paul’s Square. The firm was also listed in Wrightson’s 1818 directory as aquafortis makers. He leased the estate of Wroxall Abbey from 1771 to 1806, and then moved to Rowington Hall and farm which he bought from William Smith in 1806. He added the stone front to the house, and his son John Aston added to the estate. Descendants of the family were still living there in 1896.
The will of Samuel Aston was dated 14 October 1820 with a codicil of 9 November that year. Probate was granted on 23 July 1821. The Will mentions his wife Jane Aston; his sons William, Thomas, Samuel and John; his daughters Ann, Maria, Harriette, Helen, Jane (wife of John Meredith of Birmingham: £2k bequeathed in addition to the £1k given on her marriage), and Sarah (wife of George Warriner of Bloxham); his sister Mary; a friend William Betts; and William Wills/Wells lately of Rowington. It refers to lands in High Cross, the mansion house of Rowington Hall, and farms etc at Bushwood in Old Stratford hamlet. It makes provision for his sons William, Thomas and John to carry on the trade at St Paul’s Square, for equal benefit, from John’s 21st birthday.

Thomas ASTON1
M, #1024, b. about 1789, d. 11 November 1855
Parents
Biography
Thomas ASTON was born about 1789. He and
Elizabeth BETTS were married on 15 September 1814 in Birmingham, St. Martin’s.
1 He died on 11 November 1855, at age ~66, in Soho Park, Handsworth.
2 Thomas Aston carried on the family Button Manufacturing business after his father’s death, in partnership with his brothers William and John. The partnership was dissolved in December 1823, the business being carried on subsequently by Thomas and John only. They continued to trade under their father’s and uncles’s names as “Samuel and Thomas Aston”, and are listed in Pigot’s Directory of 1828-9 at 40 St Paul’s Square as button makers and vitriol makers. In 1833 the partnership of Thomas and John (now describing themselves as Gilt and Plated button makers) was dissolved, the business being carried on subsequently by John alone.
In November 1833, Thomas Aston, in partnership with John Robinson and Samuel Sabine Edkins, took over the ailing business of the Soho Plate Company that had been established by Matthew Boulton in 1796. They registered a new hallmark of “REA” in 1834. However, they failed to save the company from closure, their partnership being formally dissolved at the end of 1847. Thomas Aston continued to manufacture and supply some of their goods, such as photographic plates, parabolic reflectors for lighthouses, etc., on his own account through his premises at Brook Street, St Paul’s Square, Birmingham and also at Salisbury Square, London, the premises of the former Soho Plate Company.
Thomas Aston was enumerated with his wife Elizabeth at 4 Vyse Street, Birmingham in the 1851 census, and described as a Retired Silversmith. At some time after that they moved to Soho Park, where new residences were being built on the former site of Matthew Boulton’s manufactory.
In his will dated 8 Mar 1839 Thomas described himself as a Silver Plate Manufacturer of Hunters Lane Birmingham. His executors were his wife Elizabeth and two sons Samuel and Thomas. The will was proved 15 Feb 1856, administration being granted to Samuel the surviving executor.

“Canon Basil Aston
C.P. writes:-
Canon Basil Aston was the most lovable man I have ever known. He was a strong man, a wise man possessed by a devastating common sense. He was a happy man enjoying the simple things of life. As I look back upon him he leaves a sense of continuing joy. There must be countless people who were the better for merely having seen the vicar as he walked the roads and streets of the parishes he served. He knew that Christianity was a life to be lived. He knew and understood the dogmas and profundities, but he also knew that it was not much use spending time talking about them. His ministry was a ministry to individual men and women. He brought peace with him. He was in the very best tradition of the English Parish Priest. He will be remembered by all who met him with gratitude and real affection.”.
