Joshua Scholefield was a politician, businessman and Member of Parliament. He was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, but by 1800 he was well established in Birmingham. He prospered as an iron manufacturer, merchant, and banker, and became the director of two large banks—the National Provincial Bank of England and the London Joint Stock Bank—and of the Metropolitan Assurance Company. After the Reform Act of 1832 was passed he joined Thomas Attwood as one of the preordained MPs for the new borough of Birmingham. He was returned at every election until his death.

Clement Cotterill was the seventh son of William and Jane Matilda Scholefield. He was vicar of Holy Trinity, Knightsbridge and as a self-taught musician he composed several hymns that were published, including “The Day Thou Gavest”.
