John MEREDITH was born about 1847. He and
Lizzie Helen WEBB were married on 2 September 1874 in St. Mary’s Chapel, Brecon, Wales, - witnesses Rich. Webb and Margaret A.M.E.J.Parfitt.
2 He and
Elizabeth Sarah were married after 1911. He died on 27 August 1928, at age ~81.
John Meredith was a Chemist & Druggist. He was living at High Street, Brecon at the time of his marriage in 1874. He was enumerated in the 1881 census of Wales at 26 High Street, Brecon. By 1901 his address was 32 High Street and he was described as a Grocer & Shopkeeper.
Following his death in 1928, a short obituary appeared in the newsweekly Chemist and Druggist:
“On August 27, Mr. John Meredith, chemist and druggist, Pedwardine, Brecon, aged eighty-two. Mr. Meredith was for many years in business in High Street, Brecon, latterly as a senior partner in the firm of Meredith & Stanton. He was one of the founders of the local chamber of trade, and a well-known freemason.”
The Brecon County Times had a longer obituary as follows:
“"The death took place at his residence on Cradoc Road, Brecon, on Monday, at the age of 82, of Jno. Meredith, J.P., head of the well-known firm of Meredith and Sons and one of the most successful and respected business men in Breconshire. Until two or three years ago Mr Meredith led a very active life, and he followed his favourite pastime, hunting with the Brecon Hounds, till he was well over 70. For 25 years he was honorary secretary of the Hunt, and his valuable services were recognised by a handsome presentation on his giving up the office.
He was a Freemason of very long standing, a past master of the Brecknock Lodge and a grand lodge officer of the South Wales Province. For an equally long period he was a strong supporter of the Brecon Agricultural Show, and for many years served as a committeeman and steward. At one time he was prominently connected with the Brecon Chamber of Trade. A devoted Churchman, he had held numerous offices open to a layman, and had been warden both of the Cathedral and Parish Churches. In politics he was a Conservative of the old school, and a loyal though unobtrusive supporter of his party. In 1921 he was made a justice of the peace for the county, an honour well deserved by a long life of service to his day and generation which would have probably been conferred years before had he sought public notice.
Mr Meredith came of one of the oldest yeomen families in Herefordshire, settled at Pedwardine, near Brampton Bryan, for the last 300 years. He was twice married, and leaves a widow and four sons.
The funeral will take place today (Thursday) and will be private.”.

James MEREDITH was born on 8 January 1850 in Lower Pedwardine, Brampton Bryan, Herefordshire.
2 He and
Edith BLAKEWAY were married on 20 June 1893 in St Thomas’s church, Stourbridge. He died on 30 March 1933, at age 83.
James Meredith was a Grocer and Wine Merchant at 20 High Street, Kidderminster in 1881. He was recorded as a Farmer at Lodge Farm, Chaddesley Corbett in 1891 and 1901, and was living there in the year of his death in 1933. Probate was granted in London on 17 June 1933 to Francis Henry Meredith, farmer, and Agnes Annie Meredith, spinster, his effects being valued at £14,743-16s-3d.
His obituary in the Kidderminster Shuttle was as follows:
“The death of Mr James Meredith robs Chaddesley of one of is best friends. Since Mr Meredith bought the Lodge Farm in Jubilee year 1887, he has constantly been a power for good in this parish. No one has set a better example as a worker and as a sport, for although he rarely would let anything distract his attention from work he was ever ready to encourage every form of sport, and his love for the ancient game of cricket was never concealed. Of quiet unassuming manner, yet affectionate disposition, he made friends wherever he went. He was never anxious to take part in public life, but never shirked public duty if requested to assist at any time. For many years he was school manager and a trustee of the local charities, and his colleagues have placed on record their high appreciation of the valuable services. He died aged 84 years on March 29th 1933.”.
