John MATHER1
M, #1, b. about 1734, d. 2 March 1825
Biography
John MATHER was born about 1734. He and
Lydia were married. He died on 2 March 1825, at age ~91, in Birmingham.
2 He is assumed to be same John Mather whose obituary appeared in 1825 as follows:
“AT Birmingham, on the morning of March 2nd, in the 90th year of his age, Dr. John Mather, who had been a most cordial receiver of the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg, for more than fifty years. He was first introduced to those inestimable writings by seeing the treatise on Heaven and Hell advertised in the newspaper, about the time of its first publication, upon being translated into the English language. Curiosity led him to purchase it ; and its perusal convinced him of the truth of its contents. This excited in him an ardent desire to be furnished with all the other theological works of the illuminated author ; and he ever prized them above all others, except the Holy Word, the next rank to which they held in his esteem. He read them in the Latin, and studied them daily for a long course of years. He constantly referred to them as a rule of life, and manifested great zeal in recommending them to others. He was a correspondent of the venerable Hartley, and the ties of friendship were formed between them, though they never saw each other. During a considerable portion of his life he practised as a physician in Bedfordshire, in which capacity he was peculiarly eminent and successful.”.

He was an intelligent man, on very good terms with his neighbour Lord Oxford, who was Lord of the Manor at Brampton Bryan. This Lord Oxford may have been Robert Harley, the 1st Earl of Oxford and Mortimer, who died in 1724, but could also have been Edward the 2nd Earl or his cousin Edward the 3rd Earl, who were both of the same generation as David Meredith, although older.

Biography
James Meredith
(1753-1848)
(Photo courtesy of Ian Hillman, from an original portrait)
James MEREDITH was born on 20 February 1753 in Brampton Bryan, Herefordshire.
1 He and
Sarah Rhodes MATHER were married on 25 April 1797 in St Peter’s, Wolverhampton, By licence. James a bachelor of St. Phillip's Birmingham, Sally a spinster. Witnesses John Mather and Joseph Meready.
2 He died on 9 March 1848, at age 95, in Colmore Row, Birmingham.
3,4,5 James was one of the founders of the New Church in Birmingham and leader of its Swedenborg Society. He was educated in the Free Grammar School of his native village, Brampton Bryan. He came to reside in Birmingham in 1774, at the age of 21. He was a shareholder of Birmingham Old Library, where he first read the works of Swedenborg.
In 1829 he retired from the firm of varnish makers that included James Meredith junior, John Meredith [two of his sons], Samuel Clinton and Samuel Lawrence. The business was listed in Holden's Directory of Birmingham for 1803 as Meredith & Co., varnish makers. The firm became Meredith, Clinton & Lawrence in 1830 and later Meredith & Co. It was trading under that name well into the 20th century.
The varnish making business is considered to have been established by a John Meredith around 1780, as one of the first in the country. However, the identity of that John is unclear, and there is no other family member or relation of the right age or occupation. Further research is needed to establish whether it was in fact James who established the varnish business. His marriage announcement in the Staffordshire Advertiser in 1797 is a reference to the contrary, as it describes him as a draper.
His death was announced in the Birmingham Gazette of 13 March 1848 as follows:
“On Thursday last, at his residence, in Colmore-row, at the advanced age of 95, James Meredith, Esq.. He was a most worthy and excellent man, and a real and genuine Christian in heart and life, exemplary in all the social and domestic duties, and deservedly distinguished for his benevolence, urbanity, integrity, and cheerful piety, and enjoyed the sincere esteem of all who had the pleasure of forming his acquaintance. Of him it may with truth be said, that, as far as human frailty would permit, he strictly fulfilled the Divine requirements “To do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.” Mic. vi., 8.”
His Will dated 16 October 1839 was proved at Lichfield Consistory Court on 6 April 1848. A transcription of his obituary that appeared in The Intellectual Repository has been made.
