Dr. Reginald Herbert OWEN, D.D.1
M, #1435, b. 25 May 1887, d. 24 February 1961
Parents
Biography
Dr. Reginald Herbert OWEN, D.D., was born on 25 May 1887 in East Dulwich, London.
1 He and
Jane Eckstein HUNT were married on 17 June 1913 in Lancaster Parish Church.
2 He died on 24 February 1961, at age 73, in Paraparaumu, New Zealand.
1 Hos obituary was published in the Times as follows:
“Dr. Reginald Herbert Owen, D.D., former Bishop of Wellington and Primate and Archbishop of New Zealand, died at Paraparaumu yesterday, our Wellington Correspondent reports. He was 73. Owen was appointed Bishop of Wellington in 1946 and elected Primate six years later. He relinquished both positions last year because of ill-health. From 1916 to 1934 he was headmaster at Uppingham School.
Reginald Herbert Owen, the son of Herbert C. Owen, of Sydenham Hill, was born on May 25, 1887, and educated at Dulwich College, where he was in the XV, the XI, and captain of Fives, and Wadham College, Oxford, where he earned a considerable reputation on the river, gaining a Blue in the university eight in 1910. But perhaps his short rowing career was most remarkable for the fact that he won the Thames Cup in his college crew in 1908 and 1909. Wadham has always been a relatively small college, and this was the first occasion on which they had won an event at Henley since 1849. Owen also rowed for Leander in the Grand and Stewards challenge cups in 1910.
He took a first class in classical moderations in 1908 and a third class in Litt. Hum. in 1910. For two years he was assistant-master at Clifton College, in 1912 he was elected a fellow of Worcester College, and in 1914-15 he was Tutor and Dean.
In November, 1915, when he was only 28, the trustees of Uppingham School chose him to succeed the Rev. H.W. McKenzie as headmaster. In the ensuing 18 years he set his seal upon the school. When he took up his task the school had too few classrooms and both its financial position and its choice of headmaster were hampered by the fact that it owned only one out of the 13 boarding houses. By the time he relinquished his headmastership the result of his strenuous work, personal influence and reputation among old boys of the school was - in terms of cash alone - worth £200,000 to the school, and the £200,000 was represented by a series of admirably equipped classrooms, the construction of a new quadrangle, the re-building of two of the boarding houses, and the completion of a housing scheme under which all the boarding houses became the property of the school. Science laboratories, a sanatorium, and a sports pavilion were also put up under Owen's administration. In 1933 he was elected to an official fellowship as Classical Lecturer and Chaplain of Brasenose College, Oxford, and he retired at the end of the Easter term, 1934, being succeeded by Mr. J.F. Wolfenden, now Sir John Wolfenden.
Owen remained at Oxford - except for a period of war service as chaplain in the R.N.V.R. - until 1946. In November of that year he accepted the Bishopric of Wellington and was consecrated in St. Paul's pro-cathedral the following March. Six years later he was elected by the General Synod Primate and Archbishop of New Zealand in succession to the Most Rev. C.W. West-Watson. His work attracted well-earned admiration for he was as indefatigable a diocesan and primate as he had been a headmaster. In Wellington he led two successful campaigns to build and staff churches in new areas and witnessed the laying of the cathedral foundation-stone by the Queen in 1954. Though necessarily devoting much time to the national welfare of the Church he continued a wide visitation of his own diocese, where he was greatly esteemed for his wise guidance and inspiring leadership. In 1959 ill-health obliged him to announce his retirement.
He married in 1913 Jane, daughter of A.W. Hunt, of Longlands, Lancaster.”.
1 The marriage was announced as follows: “On the 17th June, at the Parish Church, Lancaster, by the Rev. Canon King, St. Philip's, Sydenham, assisted by the Rev. A.F.C. Owen, uncle of the bridegroom, and the Rev. E.S. Hunt, brother of the bride, Reginald Herbert Owen, Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Charles Owen, of Hillsdale, Hillcrest-road, Sydenham, to Jane Eckstein, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur William Hunt, of Longlands, Lancaster.”.
