In January 1819 he was appointed First Class, Assessor of Taxes, at an annual salary of £200. In 1824 he had completed 24 years, 6 months of service. In November 1825 his position as Assessor with the "Late Department of the Assessed Taxes" had been abolished, his "salary and emoluments" totalled £230 15s 4d, his period of service totalled 23 years, 11 months and that an annual compensation allowance of £134 12s 3d was paid from that time. His death is recorded in the House of Commons Parliamentary Papers: "Account of Retired Allowances or Superannuations in Public Offices, 1853," indicates Charles died 18 March, 1852. That record also states that he was a tax collector and that the"Amount" of "Annual Superannuation Allowance" on his behalf that "ceased" upon his death was £134 12s 3d. - Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery, Guelph, Ontario

If so, wife's name was Pearly. No record of death so assume he was either still living in 1922, the last year for which Ontario death registrations are available, or had left Ontario. Elmore (William James Elmore) Meredith

Parents
Biography
- Birth: 28 September 1888; Yorkton, North West Territories (now Saskatchewan)
- Death: 19 September 1965; Vancouver, BC
- Note: Last digit of birth year not clear in 1901 census, however his birth was registered (Saskatchewan birth reg'n #10635) and is seen to be 1888. However, his death registration gives a birth year of 1887. Cause of death colon cancer.
Elmore was a very well-known lawyer in BC, served as President of the Law Society at one time.
From: (re: history of UBC law school)
E. A. Lucas, senior Vancouver lawyer and self-described "old crock", reported in glowing terms on his 1946 encounter with the student body. He remarked on "the spirit of the enterprise" that he considered "the very essence" of the new faculty. The mood was contagious. Lucas reported an atmosphere "of fresh and eager beginning. Take two hard-baked old crocks like Elmore Meredith and me. Driving back from our session with them, we never stopped talking of the inspiring effect of just looking in on the fine new adventure. The whole set-up is radiant with youth and determination. They know where they are going and they are surely on their way."

Gertrude Helen Meredith
F, #11619, b. 28 May 1891
Parents
Biography
- Birth: 28 May 1891; Yorkton, North West Territories (now Saskatchewan)
- Note: 1901 census gives birth date for Gertrude Meredith as 28 May 1891 and 1911 census also says 1891; Saskatchewan birth registration #896 is for Helen Meredith born 28 May 1892. It makes sense that the eldest daughter would have been named for her paternal grandmother, but appears that she later became known as Gertrude and the "Helen" part of her name was lost. The actual year is a toss up, as the birth may have been registered some years later.
She is probably the Gertrude Meredith born Canada, age 28, secretary, father born England and mother born Canada, living in Los Angeles, California in 1920. In 1921 she was a teacher and living with her parents on Pendrell Street, Vancouver, BC; and by 1925 she, her mother, sister Caroline and brother Howard are all living in Brooklyn. Gertrude's occupation is again teacher. In 1930 Howard and Gertrude were still living in Brooklyn.
A relative (JG) sent me the following note about Gertrude: "My Mum had contact with Gertrude Meredith who lived in New York City and participated in pairs skating, partner Joseph Savage (7th place) in the 1932 Olympics, Lake Placid, NY."
