Note: Living with his parents in 1861. In 1881 was a merchant in West Gwillimbury. In 1891, when his son's birth was registered, they lived in Toronto. In 1901 Joseph was a grocer in Toronto. In 1911 they lived at 202 Cowan, Toronto. Death reg'n #1035: residence 202 Cowan Ave, Toronto; gentleman, age 74, cause of death pneumonia, 10 days.
Note: Frances Margaret Ramsay; 010012-1876 Joseph Meredith CARTER, 33, Canada, Bond Head, merchant, s/o William & Miriah (sic) CARTER, married Frances Margaret RAMSAY, 22, Tecumseth, same, d/o George & Rachael RAMSEY, witn; Francis BOTTERS & Ellen RAMSEY of Tecumseth. 10 Feb, 1876 at Tecumseth.
In 1881 there was an "E. Merdith" (female) aged 20, born Ireland living with this family. She may have been Esther Meredith, daughter of Richard and Ellen, but if so, Esther was also enumerated with her parents in Tecumseth and there her age was given as 17. I have no other documented possibilities for the identity of this woman.

Note: Immigrated from England in 1869. When George married Emma he was a widower and he was the manager of a grain elevator. In 1901 his occupation was "Ware House Man." George died before the 1911 census. There were two George Sutherlands who died in the interval between the two censuses, neither of whom is an exact fit for this man. I've assumed I have the correct man as this one died in Meaford aged 55, even though the death registration says he was born Ireland?
