Two daughters baptised in St. Johns Cathedral in Buffalo, NY in 1845 +. According to a story in a (Sheboygan?) paper, the immigrant Hagerty first went to Canada and then to New York, Wisconsin and Kansas. From there the family dispersed north south and west.

Marmaduke Heagerty

M, #19172, b. about 1800, d. 3 November 1879

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1800; Ireland
  • Death: 3 November 1879; Rochester, NY
  • Burial: 6 November 1879; Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, NY
  • Note: There was a baptism for "Duke," son of John Hagerty and Catherine Miles, in Rosscarbery 9 March 1805 (see separate entry), who could be this Marmaduke? Alternatively, he may have been the son of James and Catherine Hagerty of Derry, Ross parish, County Cork, received into the church, Rosscarbery, March 1805 (also see separate entry). Or his parents may have been a different couple altogether. There may be some indication that his father was the James Heagerty who is in the Kilkerranmore flaxgrower's list of 1796.
However, this Marmaduke is definitely the father of the Catherine Haggerty who married Edward Tanner in Rosscarbery in 1849. Catherine and Edward Tanner ended up in Rochester, NY, where Marmaduke lived his later years. He is also the Marmaduke who was in Woodfield, Kilkerranmore parish in both 1833 and 1853, at the time of the Tithes Applotments and the Griffiths Valuation. I have not found the parish register recording his marriage to Eliza Bateman, but it was in the Marriage License Bonds. Surname spelled Hegarty in MLB Index and Heagerty in FamilySearch marriage index. Heagerty seems to have been a fairly common spelling in the Clonakilty/Rosscarbery area at the time.
In the United States 1860 census a widowed Marmaduke living in Cambria, Niagara County, New York, age 56, with 3 children: John E., Rebecca Jane and Jane Anne. Marmaduke was a farm labourer. The parish register for St Luke's Episcopal Church in Rochester NY indicates that his daughter, Rebecca Jane, was from Woodfield, Cork, confirming that this family came from Woodfield. In 1860 Marmaduke was living near a George Haggerty who had a son Marmaduke in Niagara County, New York, suggesting they might be brothers? In 1860 George was 52 and in 1870 age 61. George and his family were living in Cambria, Niagara county, New York in 1850. In 1840, 1860 and 1870 they were in Lewiston, Niagara county; when the children were all said to have been born in New York, suggesting they probably arrived in the USA before 1838.
In 1870 Marmaduke was listed as age 61, a laborer living with family of his granddaughter, Elizabeth McCutcheon in Rochester, Monroe county, NY, along with "Jennie Haggerty," age 22, also born Ireland. He was probably the Marmaduke on whose behalf son James B. Haggerty applied for a civil war pension 1 July 1870? I have been unable to find any further record of this James B. Haggerty.
Death registration: Marmaduke Hagarty, age 84, died 3 November 1879. Cause of death as "Grovel."
In 1838 a Marmaduke Hegarty, age 30, was in prison in Cork city, having been convicted of being a debtor. This may be the same man?
Although the pieces are beginning to come together, there is still sorting to be done re: Marmadukes!
  • Note: Eliza Bateman; Marriage licence index shows an 1827 marriage between Marmaduke Heagerty and Eliza Bateman in the Diocese of Cork and Ross. Heagerty was a common spelling in the Clonakilty region and there were also Batemans there. Date, etc. makes this couple strong candidates for the parents of the Catherine who married Edward Tanner.

Family: Eliza Bateman (b. about 1794, d. before 1860)

Catherine (Kate) Heagerty

F, #19173, b. 17 May 1829, d. 16 December 1899

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 17 May 1829; County Cork
  • Death: 16 December 1899; Rochester, NY
  • Burial: 19 December 1899; Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, NY
  • Note: Birth date calculated from age at death reported on cemetery death record, 70 years, 7 months, 3 days; cause of death chronic institial nephritis. Death certificate is for Katherine Tanner, born Ireland, died 16 December 1899, and records her parents as Marmaduke Hagerty and Eliza, both born Ireland. Dec. 19 is from the cemetery record and probably represents the burial date.
Marriage record, January 1849, gives Catherine's age as 19. She would have turned 20 later that year.
In the USA census of 1870 Catherine is listed as being 40; in the NY state census of 1892 she is 59; in 1900 Edward is a widower. Daughter of Marmaduke Hagarty, age 61, who was living with Catherine's daughter in 1870. A brother could be Thomas Haggerty who also had a son Marmaduke and whose widow and children moved from Canada to Rochester, NY and in 1880 were listed second household to the Tanners in 1880 census. In 1870 a Carrie Haggerty, age 22, born Ireland, book binder, was living with Catherine and Edward. Seems likely she was a sister, or if not, perhaps a niece?
  • Note: Edward R. Tanner; Marriage reg'd Skibbereen district; married in Rosscarbery.

Edward R. Tanner

M, #19174, b. May 1821, d. 4 May 1911

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: May 1821; County Cork
  • Death: 4 May 1911; Rochester, NY
  • Note: There are two Edward Tanners in the 1853 Griffiths Valuation in Cork: one in Murragh parish, the other in Castleventry. This man would have been the latter, occupying blocks 7 and 8 in Sarue townland, a total of 11 acres.
The Edward and Catherine Tanner who emigrated to the USA in 1857 must be this couple--their second son was named Marmaduke and Catherine's death registration names her parents as Marmaduke and Eliza Hagarty. Edward's daughter Elizabeth (married name McCutchen) had Marmaduke Haggerty living with them in 1870, age given as 61, Catherine's father. In 1880 there is only a single man listed between the household of the Tanner family (indexed as Fanner by ancestry) and the family of Harriet Jones, mother of the Haggerty children, one of them a Marmaduke. I am showing these Tanner/Fanner records as all referring to a single couple, while noting there is no definite proof that is so.
In 1870 Edward and Catherine, with 7 children were in Erie PA. The two youngest, aged 2 and 5 were born in PA; two aged 6 and 8 were born in NY; three eldest, ages 14 to 19, were born in Ireland, indicating they must have arrived in the US between 1856 and 1862. The 1879 Rochester Directory shows the following all living at 139 Hunter: Edward, laborer; Edward W. jr., clerk; Geo. M., casket maker; and Richard H. carpenter. All but Edward are listed as "b" at their address, probably indicating they were boarders? Other Tanners living at other Rochester addresses were: Almon E. salesman, 17 Champlain; Catharine deceased 15 Aug 1878; Charles carpenter, 16 Seward; Edward Hackman, 83 Atkinson; Edward W. clerk, 75 E. Main; George A. bookkeeper, boards 56 Atkinson; Isabella stitcher, boards 11 Terry; Marmaduke M. laborer, Frost Ave.; Mary waiter Framers' Hotel, b do; Richard carpenter, b 3 Tremont pl.; and William carpenter, r. 196 W Main, house 56 Atkinson (Directory image on Ancestry.com).
In 1892 on the NY state census Edward was 72 and a contractor, living with his sons George, Henry, James, Frank and Robert in Rochester; in 1900 he was said to have been born May 1821 and that he had immigrated in 1855. At the age of 79 and on his death registration his occupation was said to be quarryman! In 1910 he was living with his daughter, Elizabeth McCutchen, and her family.
  • Note: Catherine (Kate) Heagerty; Marriage reg'd Skibbereen district; married in Rosscarbery.

Family: Catherine (Kate) Heagerty (b. 17 May 1829, d. 16 December 1899)
