George Haggerty

M, #15494, b. about 1810, d. after 1870

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1810; Ireland
  • Death: After 1870; New York
  • Note: In 1850 George's age appears to be 28, but in 1860 he was 52 and in 1870 age 61. George and his family were living in Cambria, Niagara county, New York in 1850, when George was listed as a shoemaker; all of the children were said to be born in Ireland, including a 2-year old. In 1860 and 1870 they were in Lewiston, Niagara county; then and henceforth the children were all said to have been born in New York, suggesting they probably arrived in the USA before 1838. I have been unable to find any record of their marriage in Ireland--possible they married in NY?
George was in the Lewiston area in 1840. There were 7 people in the household: one male in his 30s would have been George, one male and one female in their 20s--who is the male? perhaps a brother of George? Jane would be the woman; one unknown female aged 5 to 9; two males and one female aged less than 5--the boys would probably have been James and George Jr, and the girl would have been Caroline who died in 1841.
The 1865 State Census shows the following: George 56, Teressa J. 47, George E. 25, Edwin 16 and Franklin 13. Private Marmaduke, 15, deceased, is listed separately with other deceased members of the military. Henrietta, age 21, is in the household of George and Mary Kipper.
Neither George nor his wife have been found in the 1880 census, suggesting they probably died at some point in the 1870s?
It's possible this is the George Haggerty whose parents were Marmaduke and Sarah Bennett, christened Ballymodan parish, Bandon, County Cork, 19 July 1821--see separate entry. However, I think that is unlikely. George was a shoemaker suggesting possibly Clonakilty origins? Also in Cambria, Niagara county in 1860 were Marmaduke Haggerty and his family. Must be related--probably a brother. I am now confident that this 1860 Marmaduke was from Woodfield, Kilkerranmore (just a stone's throw from Clonakilty) and who was married to Eliza Bateman. Hence, I do think it likely that Marmaduke and George were brothers. What ties them together is that George had a son Marmaduke plus both lived in Cambria NY--George in 1850; Marmaduke in 1860.
  • Note: Therese "Jane"; not known if married in Ireland or in the USA

Family: Therese "Jane" (b. about 1817, d. after 1870)

Therese "Jane"

F, #15495, b. about 1817, d. after 1870

Biography

  • Birth: About 1817; Ireland
  • Death: After 1870
  • Note: In 1855 NY state census and on the tombstone for their eldest daughter, Caroline, George's wife is listed as Jane; from 1860 onward she is Theresa/Teresa, sometimes with a middle initial J. I think it most likely this is the same woman.
In 1850 census there is a Mary A. Raymond, age 21, in the "Haggarty" household--born Ireland, no occupation listed--might be a sister of Theresa Jane?
  • Note: George Haggerty; not known if married in Ireland or in the USA

Family: George Haggerty (b. about 1810, d. after 1870)

George E. Haggerty

M, #15496, b. about 1840

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1840; New York state
  • Note: Age 10 in 1850. George was a laborer and living with his parents in 1860. The closest I can find to this man in 1870 was a man aged 26, born New York and in jail in Indiana--probably not the same person? In 1880 there is a George Haggerty, 38, laborer, born New York, parents born Ireland--probably him?

Family: Celestine (b. about 1856)

Henrietta J. Haggerty

  • Birth: August 1843; New York state
  • Death: After 1920
  • Note: 1850 census age 7, 16 in 1860. In 1870 and 1880 she was married to Charles Manning, a painter, also aged 26. From 1900 to 1920, she was a widow and was listed as the "aunt" in the Michigan household of George Aldrich, son of her sister Maria. Henrietta did not have any children.
  • Note: Charles H. Manning; Married sometime in the 1860s; no chlidren. Were living in Chicago, Illinois by 1870 census.

Cecilia Caroline Haggerty

F, #15498, b. about 1845

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1845; Niagara County, NY
  • Note: 1850 census name recorded as Caroline. It appears they initially gave her the same name as the child who had died in 1841, but in 1855 this daughter is recorded as Cecilia--perhaps one was a middle name? There was a "Carrie Haggerty" living with Catherine and Edward Tanner in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1870, who may have been Cecilia Caroline? Assume she married before 1880 either in PA or in NY?

Marmaduke Haggerty

M, #15499, b. about 1847, d. 12 July 1864

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1847; Cambria, Niagara County, New York
  • Death: 12 July 1864; Virginia, USA
  • Burial: Richmond, Virginia
  • Note: I have found a number of records for a Marmaduke Haggerty living in Niagara County, NY, born in the 1840s. I think they likely all pertain to the son of George and Theresa Jane Haggerty of Cambria and Lewiston, NY. However, there may have been 2 Marmadukes.
Item from the Niagara Falls [NY] Gazette, 28 April 1963:
Headline: "33 on Lewiston Civil War Roll; More Sought"
Among those listed: "Marmaduke Haggerty, 15, enlisted Sept. 3, 1863, at Rochester, private, Co. B, 164th NY Infantry. Wounded at Cold Harbor, Va., June 1864, died July 12, 1864, as POW. Buried in Richmond, Va."
Ancestry.com shows a Civil War Muster Roll Abstract for a Marmaduke Haggerty, who enlisted in Buffalo, NY, 18 Sep 1862, age 21; mustered 19 Nov 1862, Co. B, 164th NY Infantry. That record indicates that he was missing in action and captured in Cold Harbor, Virginia, 3 June 1864. That record also indicates that Marmaduke was born in Cambria, that his occupation was shoemaker (which was also the occupation of George Haggerty, father of this man), that he had dark eyes, hair and complexion, and was 5'5" tall.
There are discrepancies between these 2 reports: if they both refer to the same man, was he 15 or 21 when he enlisted? And did he enlist in Rochester or in Buffalo? in 1862 or 1863? Or is it possible there were 2 men? If so, then the other man's father must have been Marmaduke Haggerty, living in Cambria in 1860 and in Rochester in 1870. However, the census records make it certain there was only one Marmaduke and that he was born about 1847:
Federal and NY State census records for Marmadukes born in the 1840s-
1850, Cambria, son of George, age 3
1855, Cambria, son of George, age 7
1860, Lewiston, son of George, age 13
1865, Lewiston, Deaths of Officers and Enlisted Men since April 1861, reported by the families to which the deceased belonged, Marmaduke Haggerty, died at age 15, enlisted Sept. 1862, 164th Reg't.
