Rice Meredith

M, #10852, b. about 1850, d. December 1897

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1850; Derrylough
  • Christening: Rosenallis Parish, Queens County, Ireland
  • Death: December 1897; County Dublin, Ireland
  • Burial: 29 December 1897
  • Note: Baptised between November 1849 and September 1850. He was well-known as a race horse breeder and trainer.
He died at Kilsallaghan, Co Dublin 29 Dec 1897 according to the wills calender. His death was reported in the sports section of The Times, 31 Dec. 1897 (copied by KW):
"Mr. Rice Meredith, a well known trainer of racehorses, died somewhat suddenly, on Wednesday night, at his residence, The Rath, Kilsallaghan, county Dublin. He fractured his leg recently in the hunting field and never recovered the shock to his system. As a trainer he was very successful, some of the horses passing from his stables having won the principal races in Ireland and a few of the not least important in England." A newpaper clipping (unknown newspaper) of 1893 reports on the sale of his horses at Rathbride Manor.
Rice was also evidently a keen hunter with hounds, as a family scrapbook includes numerous clippings reporting on the hunts of the "Ward Hounds." One clipping notes: . . . Baytown where our quarry was loosed away. ...The deer took us thourough . . . and she was safely taken at . . . " These were hunts for deer. Rice Meredith is frequently named as one of those completing the hunt, and his son "Master Meredith" (Evelyn) is also named in a couple of them.
An obituary in the possession of his great grand-daughter notes:
"This gentleman, who was very popular with the Irish as well as English racegoers, and who trained at Rathbride Manor, Curragh, some good horses for members of the Turf Club, died at his residence, The Rath, Kilsallaghan, on Wed. night at 9. The deceased gentleman met with an accident about 6 weeks ago, which resulted in his leg being broken, and up to Weds. he was steadly improving, being about on crutches for about a week. He was retiring to bed on Wed night, he was taken suddenly ill, and in a few minutes he expired."
In 1916 in the war record of his son's death it was noted that his parents were Rice and Eveline of Curragh, County Kildare, suggesting that Rice moved to Curragh after he left Derrylough, although both Rice and Eveline were deceased by 1916. Derrylough was sold to the Deverells in about 1890.
From an unidentified book on the irish Derby, it was noted ((p. 64):
"Kentish Fire was the first of three Irish Derby winners trained by Rice Meredith, the outstanding Irish flat race trainer . . . "

A Google search for "Creed Meredith" pulls up many, many citations for a James Creed Meredith who is credited with having translated and published Emanuel Kant's "Critique of Aesthetic Judgement." The following is from one of those sources: http://www.evcforum.net/ubb/Forum14/HTML/000150.html : "In terms of Irish philosophers, I think everyone has their own favorite. For me, no one comes to mind quicker than James Creed Meredith (d. 1942), credited with the superb 1911 translation of Kant's Critique of Aesthetic Judgement. In the analytical index of his famous translation, Meredith asked the pertinent question concerning Irish history and society, furnishing his own characteristically prescient response: "What do you call a pretty girl in Ireland?" "A tourist.""
    [burial info from Thoms Directory]
James became a Quaker and was a bit of an activist. An interesting article by him entitled "Perpetual Peace and the Doctrine of Neutrality" is available online at: http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=1526-422X(191507)25%3A4%3C431%3APPATDO%3E2.0.CO%3B2-8 . When the War of Independence was over, and Ireland won its independence, some Dáil deputies argued that the philosophical approach of the Brehon law system should be updated to a new legal system in the new state. Among those who shared this view was James Creed Meredith, a barrister and judge, appointed by the Dáil in 1919 as President of the Supreme Court, who actually gave a judgement on women’s rights under Brehon law in 1920. However, Ginnell, and most of those who supported this idea, took the republican side in the subsequent Civil War (1922-23) and the idea came to nothing. The new Irish State simply accepted English Statute and Common Law as its legal system. James was appointed to be Chief Judicial Commissioner of Ireland August 14, 1923.

  • Birth: 7 July 1883; Dublin, Ireland
  • Death: 1967; New Zealand
  • Note: In 1909 Llewellyn was an "insurance official" in Ireland. In 1911 the family lived at 5 Belgrave Road, Blackrock district, County Dublin. Their religion was Church of Ireland. His occupation was Insurance Inspector. There was also a servant living in the household. Llewellyn later went to New Zealand and worked for the NZ parliament. NZ death reg'n #1967/38426 says died at age 84
I think birth reg'n for Llewellyn Meredith 3rd qtr 1883, Dublin south, must be this man, although elsewhere his birth year was said to be 1885!
  • Note: Jane Helena (Jennie) Wallace; In 1911 said to have been married for two years. The marriage does not appear to have been registered in Ireland--perhaps in England in Southampton?

Family: Jane Helena (Jennie) Wallace (b. about 1888)
