Rev. Thomas (of Cappagh) Meredith
M, #15008, b. about 1800, d. 23 April 1874
Parents
Biography
- Birth: About 1800; Cappagh, Queen's county, Ireland
- Death: 23 April 1874; Rathmines, Dublin
- Burial: 25 April 1874; Church of Ireland, Maryborough, Queen's county
- Note: Thomas was a Wesleyan minister. In his later years he lived in Rathmines, Dublin. The Methodist Archives in Belfast provided information on the family. Note that their record indicated he was 73 when he died, whereas the burial record (Church of Ireland, Maryborough) gave his age as 72. Death registration index for Thomas Meredith, Dublin South, says he was 74!
The following obituary was published by the Methodist Church, courtesy Rev. Roddie of Belfast: from the Minutes of Conference, 1874, p.5:
THOMAS MEREDITH, whose birth place was Cappagh in the Queen’s County. He feared God from his childhood, and, while yet very young, a friend invited him to go with him to a class-meeting; he went, and in that means of grace, which he greatly prized to the end of his life, he learned the way of salvation by faith which is in Christ Jesus. Some years later, under the influence of a conviction that he was called of God to preach the word, and encouraged by those who had lovingly watched over him, he offered himself as a candidate for our ministry and was accepted by the Conference, and appointed to a Circuit in 1828.
Thence forward, for forty years, in the active discharge of the varied duties of a Methodist Minister, he maintained an unblemished character. He was a man of sound judgment and of great conscientiousness, was faithful in the performance of all the duties of the ministry, and walking closely with God, was mighty in prayer, and powerful in appeals to the conscience. His preaching was much owned of God in the conversion of sinners and in the edification of believers. He was somewhat reserved in manner, but was tender and affectionate in spirit, and a faithful and wise friend. When, on becoming a supernumerary, he settled in Dublin, he rendered valuable service to the Church as long as any strength was given him, and was held in high esteem by the people amongst whom he dwelt.
In his last illness his sufferings were great, but being graciously sustained and comforted through communion with his faithful Lord, he was enabled to glorify God in the fire, and amongst his last utterances were strong expressions of confidence in and love to Him who ‘hath loved us, and hath given himself for us.’ As his life had been even and consistent, so he peacefully departed to be for ever with the Lord, on Thursday the 23rd April, 1874, in the seventy-fourth year of his age and forty-seventh of his ministry.

'he was somewhat reserved in manner, but was tender and affectionate in spirit, and a faithful and wise friend.'
We have tentatively concluded Thomas was probably the son of Samuel Meredith and Sarah Ince of Cappagh, although we do not have any documentation to support this.

- Christening: 16 December 1801; Maryborough Parish Register, Queen's county
- Death: 15 February 1852; Limerick, Ireland

Not proven that Mrs. Anne Meredith was the Anne Vanston who married a Thomas Meredith in 1832, but considered very likely. Obituary from The Wesley Methodist Magazine, (London) 1852 p. 503:
"Feb. 15th.-In Limerick city, Mrs. Anne Meredith, wife of the Rev. Thomas Meredith, aged forty-five. For about thirty years she "had walked in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost." It was her ambition to adorn her Christian profession, and to be useful in the sphere in which Providence had placed her. She was an affectionate and frugal wife. She loved her home, was a fond mother, and studied to promote the best interests of her children. She departed this life in the joyful hope of the glory of God. T. M."
KK reports that her family records name this woman as Rose--name may have been Rose Anne or Anne Rose??

Elizabeth Sarah Webster
F, #15014, b. about 1832, d. 1907
Biography
- Birth: About 1832; County Dublin, Ireland
- Death: 1907; Dublin, Ireland
- Note: At the time of her marriage, Elizabeth lived at 99 Harrington Row, Dublin. Daughter of Michael Webster, merchant, according to Methodist records. Samuel Turpin notes say her father was a builder. I can't find a possible Michael Webster in the 1911 Dublin census--he may have died before then. A witness at the marriage was Henry Webster, presumably a brother. The census shows two Henry Websters, both in their mid 30s and both Roman Catholic.
1901 census, Elizabeth age 68, born county Dublin. Believed to be the Elizabeth S. Meredith, age 73, death reg'd 2nd qtr, 1907, Dublin South district.
Elizabeth had only one child.
- Note: John Wesley Meredith; Methodist records indicate they married at the Centenary Church, Dublin. The marriage registration form indicates the Centenary Chapel, St. Peter's parish, Dublin.

Thomas Vanston
M, #15017, b. about 1813, d. 9 February 1857
Biography
- Birth: About 1813; Ireland
- Death: 9 February 1857; Canada West (Ontario)
- Burial: Mallorytown Cemetery
- Note: Although not everyone agrees with me, I think it very likely this man was the son of John Vanston and Rose Maurice/Morris, baptised 1810 in Maryborough (see separate listing). Eldest daughter being named Rosetta seems to support this connection as well.
In 1852 Thomas, 39 and Alice, 28 were living in Escott tp, Leeds county (far south-eastern part of what is now the province of Ontario). Alice was Thomas's second wife. The three eldest children in the household were children of his first wife, Agnes: Rosetta 17, Mary Ann 14, and Robert 16. Gap in ages between Mary Ann and William 8 suggests that William must have been the son of Alice, rather than Agnes, as I was told.. The younger children, Agnes 5, "Saralesia" 3, and Amelia J. 1, were also Alice's children, and would have been very young when their parents died in 1857. All of the children were born in Canada. Thomas and Robert were listed as merchants in 1852. The family was Wesleyan Methodist.

- Note: Alice Clarke; Must have married after birth of Thomas's children by his first wife, some of whom were born in Canada. Assume the marriage took place in Canada, but not impossible that Thomas may have returned to Ireland and married Alice there.
