Samuel (of Cappagh) Meredith
M, #10229, b. about 1756, d. July 1832
Parents
Biography
- Birth: About 1756; possibly Queens County, Ireland
- Marriage: About 1785; Sarah Ince; Queens County, Ireland
- Death: July 1832; Queens County, Ireland
- Burial: 4 July 1832; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
- Note: Samuel and Sarah had only two children christened after 1800 when the Maryborough register begins. They likely would have had several older children, but this is only a guess. Not proven that the Samuel married to Sarah Ince was also the Samuel who was buried in 1832, age 76, but considered likely.

Samuel Meredith
M, #10231, d. before 1863
Parents
Biography
- Christening: 20 December 1802; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
- Death: Before 1863; Canada West (Ontario)
- Note: Maryborough Baptism Register, p. 11.
This may be the Samuel who married Margaret Vanston and emigrated to Canada in about 1836. Placement NOT PROVEN, but seems likely. He may also be the Samuel whose wife Deborah Carter died in February 1828 (see separate entry). Similarly, not proven that this Samuel is the son of Samuel Meredith and Sarah Ince, but naming patterns and dates support that placement. All in all, there could be one, two or three different Samuels--if more than one, both/all were born about the same time. The gap between their marriage date and the birth of the eldest known child suggests other unknown children were born before William John, making it impossible to use the children's names as a clue to the names of Samuel's parents. There was also a Samuel Meredith who married Elizabeth Wilkinson in 1836. DNA results suggest he was a son of Thomas of The Oak.
Earliest Canadian records for Samuel and Margaret are in Eramosa Tp, Wellington County, Canada West (several other emigrants from Queen's county also settled in Eramosa) in 1836. Samuel was recorded as first living on Lot 3, Conc. 7, then in 1837 on Lot 3, Conc. 3, near Rockwood. In 1861 Samuel and his second (or third?) wife were still living in Seneca tp. Rosanna was the only one of Margaret's children living with them at that time.
- Note: Margaret Vanston; Samuel was from Clonenagh parish and Margaret from Maryborough when they married. Witnesses were James Vanston and John Power.

John (probably of Cappagh) Meredith
M, #10244, b. before 1765, d. after 1808
Parents
Biography
- Birth: Before 1765; possibly Queens County, Ireland
- Note: Birth date estimate based on records for wife Esther. No further information--could have been born earlier. No record of his burial in register in which Esther's burial is recorded. Could have been a son of John Meredith who registered title to lands in Cappagh in 1761? -- remote possibility he was that John--if so, was close to 70 when youngest child baptised.
DNA suggests that William of Ballycarnan may be another son and/or brother of Richard of Cappagh who was married to Mary Anne Alexander.

Esther Hill
F, #10245, b. about 1762, d. 1850
Parents
Biography
- Birth: About 1762; Ireland
- Burial: 2 December 1850; St. Peter's Church, Maryborough, Queen's County
- Note: Esther's youngest child was baptised in 1809, and as women often had their last child in their mid-forties, I suspect she would have been born roughly 1765. There would likely have been several other children born before 1800, the earliest date we have records for.
The 1850 burial record for Esther Meredith of Cappagh, aged 88, seems likely (but not proven!).

Richard (of Cappagh) Meredith
M, #10248, d. 1855
Parents
Biography
- Birth: Queen's County, Ireland
- Christening: 10 October 1807; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
- Death: 1855; Cappagh, Queens County
- Burial: September 1855; Maryborough, Queen's County
- Note: Richard Meredith of Cappagh registered as a voter in Maryborough East 25 June 1839. Age 48 at death (Maryborough parish register, p. 38).
Not documented that Anne Milbourne and Mary Anne Alexander were married to the same Richard Meredith, but highly likely.
- Note: Anne Milbourne; Register p. 3, # 10.
- Note: Mary Anne Alexander; Marriage reg'n, Mountmellick District, Vol 8, p. 291. This was evidently a second marriage for Richard who is said to be a widower on the registration.

George Clarke
M, #10250, b. about 1775, d. 4 January 1845
Parents
Biography
- Birth: About 1775; Ireland
- Death: 4 January 1845; Emo, Queen's county, Ireland
- Burial: St John's Cemetery, Coolbanagher parish
- Note: 1826 Tithes Applotment, Cappokeel: George Clarke, 49 acres. Tithe to pay £2 17s 4d.
Lived at Killimy, Coolbanagher parish when children were baptised. "George Clarke Esq." died at Emo 4 Jan 1845, age 69 "after a protracted illness" (reported in the "Leinster Express," 4 January, 1845, p. 3). Tombstone photo online at:, St. John's Cemetery, Church of Ireland, Coolbanagher: "Sacred to the memory George Clarke of Emo who departed this life January 12 1845 aged 69 years, Also his wife Esther Clarke who died April 25 1863 aged 85 years, Their son John W [date illegible]". Note discrepancy in dates of death. I assume that the newspaper report is probably the more accurate.
