Evelyn Rice Meredith
M, #12153, b. 19 January 1883, d. 6 January 1916
Parents
Biography
- Birth: 19 January 1883; Derrylough, Queen's County, Ireland
- Christening: 22 January 1883; Rosenallis Parish, Queen's County
- Death: 6 January 1916; England
- Burial: Shorncliffe Military Cemetery, Kent, England
- Note: Name in baptism register recorded as "Rice Evylin Stanly". He was born at Derrylough and was orphaned at a young age. His mother died a week after he was born, and he was not yet 14 when his father died. We have no information on where he lived after the death of his father. I believe I found him in the England 1901 census: Evelyn Meredith, male, 19, single, apprentice engineer living as a boarder at 140 The Quay, Wivenhoe, Essex County.
He served in World War I. Canadian military records name him as Edward Stanley Meredith, but the Commonwealth war graves record has him listed as Evelyn Rice (the service number confirms that both names refer to the same man). In the 1911 census his name is also recorded as Evelyn Rice. The index to marriage registrations lists him as Edward Meredith in 1906.
According to the 1911 census, Evelyn Rice came to Canada in 1905 and his wife arrived in 1906 (in Canada he was known as "Mickey"). His occupation was merchant, and he was in partnership "Ritchie and Meredith Provisions." They settled in Lethbridge, Alberta where he enlisted in the armed forces 28 December, 1914. He was said to be 31 years, 11 months old. He was 5' 5" tall, had dark hair, fair complexion and hazel eyes. He had two tattoos: an Irish harp on the back of his right forearm and a ship on the back of his left forearm. He indicated that he had been born in "Rosanallis", Queen's County, Ireland 21 June 1883. His occupation was Teamster. His next of kin was his wife Annie M. Meredith of 719-15th St. North, Lethbridge, Alberta (this is also the address indicated on the 1911 census). He had previously served 14 months in the military in South Africa. See: . He died while enroute to France.

Alexander Meredith
M, #12155, b. 12 July 1854, d. 24 July 1931
Parents
Biography
- Birth: 12 July 1854; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
- Marriage: 14 April 1881; Isabella Lee; Gympie District, Colony of Queensland
- Death: 24 July 1931; Gympie, Queensland, Australia
- Note: According to his marriage registration in Australia, Alexander should have been born about 1857 (his age was given as 24). However, as his father died in 1855 that is impossible. A photo of the following declaration made by his mother, Mary Anne Strong at Maryborough, Ireland: "Re: Alexander Meredith" indicates: "I am the mother of Alexander Meredith of Gympy, Queensland, Australia, that he was born on the 12 July 1854 at Cappagh in the Queens County, Ireland, that I have caused search to be made and there is not any registration of his birth procurable[?]." Dated 24 July 1890. It sounds as if he was never baptised?
When Alexander immigrated to Australia he sailed from London on 20 March 1873 on the "Gloucester," arriving in Maryborough, Queensland on 11 July 1873. He was listed as an 18 year old single male. Sailing on the same ship was Sarah Meredith, also aged 18--there were no other Merediths on board.
At the time of his marriage Alexander was a butcher in Gympie. In 1882 when his son Richard was baptised Alexander was a miner. The Mining Accidents listing held by the Queensland State Government shows Alexander was injured 23 June 1888 in Gympie at the "Ellen Harkins Mine." He suffered a severe cut on the head due the fall on rock - Source 1889/3/538. His cause of death was given as senility and heart failure.
Alexander and Isabella are buried in the Welsh part of the Cemetery. Their headstone reads: "In Loving Memory of our Welsh Ancestors, Alexander & Isabella Meredith."
