Susannah (Susan) Esther Clarke

F, #891, b. 23 July 1854, d. 20 February 1950

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 23 July 1854; Wellington county, Canada West (Ontario)
  • Death: 20 February 1950; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
  • Burial: Greenfield Cemetery, Arthur, Ontario
  • Note: Susan Clarke lived most of her life in Saskatchewan, and died there. However, her name is on the headstone marking her husband's grave in Greenfield Cemetery, Arthur, Ontario. It appears she was older than her husband, but census records do not show that--in 1891 she was listed as 34 years old, the same age as Samuel. Susan was widowed in 1898 at the age of 43, left with five children aged 8 to 18. In 1901 and in March 1905 she and the children were living in Grand Valley, Ontario. By the 1906 census she was living in "Strassburg" (now Strasbourg), Saskatchewan, with her son "S.L." (Lorne) and daughter "Anna." I haven't been able to find her in 1911, but in 1916 she was living with her daughter Irene Williams in Sutherland, Saskatchewan (now part of Saskatoon). Her granddaughter, Lois Reid, told me that she thought Susan and her children had first lived in Balcarres, Saskatchewan before they settled in Strasbourg--I have since found her son Lester located in Belcarres in 1911. However, it may be that Lester was the only one to live in Belcarres.
The National Archives online index to prairie homesteads indicates that Susan homesteaded NW 6 T25 R21 W2, just north of Strasbourg, Saskatchewan (Reel C-6290 Liber 439 Folio 354). The small building in which she homesteaded still stands near the village of Strasbourg. In 1911, her children all grown, she was forced to give up her homestead and lived the rest of her life with various of her children. I remember her living in Sutherland, now part of Saskatoon, with her daughter Irene Williams, when I was very young. Unfortunately, I never did meet her.
  • Note: Samuel Andrew Small; Ontario marriage reg'n #11523: witnesses were Barbara Small of Arthur and James Clarke of Peel tp.

Mary (Molly) Haggertie

F, #892, b. 24 September 1775, d. after 1843

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 24 September 1775; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: After 1843; Hastings County, Ontario, Canada
  • Burial: Haggerty farm cemetery, Huntingdon Twp.
  • Note: The month of Molly's birth was almost illegible and may not be correct. Molly married William Tanner in 1800 in County Cork, Ireland. They are known to have had three daughters and four sons, one of whom died in infancy. Molly and her three surviving sons came to Canada, probably after her husband's death. The exact date they arrived in Canada is not known, but on 9 March 1843 William Jr. was a sponsor at the baptism of William Haggerty, son of his cousin John and Margaret Haggerty. Molly's three daughters did not come to Canada.

Family: William Tanner (b. about 1770, d. about 1840)

Eva May Mapes

F, #894, b. 5 October 1890, d. 20 May 1978

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 5 October 1890; Ingersoll, Ontario
  • Death: 20 May 1978; Regina, Saskatchewan
  • Burial: 25 May 1978; Regina, Saskatchewan
  • Note: Birth reg'n #25305. Eva's family moved to Manitoba and then to Saskatchewan when she was a child. They settled in Strasbourg, where she became a seamstress. She told me about her work, amazing me with stories of how she could take a person's measurements and then design and make a dress without using a pattern. Her hand stitching was remarkably fine and delicate until her death many decades lates. She and her sisters maintained a close relationship throughout their lives, with most of them raising their families in Strasbourg. I remember spending an afternoon with three of them about 1960 and being impressed by the obvious pleasure they took in one another's company.
When her husband died in 1949 Eva had to earn a living--she took a course in practical nursing and did home nursing for several years. She suffered a major heart attack in 1970 and was a semi-invalid until her death.
When we were children our Grandma Small stayed with us when our parents went on holidays. She was a much loved grandma, remembered particularly for the wonderful and imaginative stories she created for us--stories about "Witchy", the good witch who used her magic to do grand and wonderful things for all humanity--what a role model!
  • Note: Lester Meredith Small; Married by M.J. Leith, Presbyterian minister at the home of Calvin Mapes in Strasbourg, Saskatchewan. Eva was 22, daughter of Calvin Mapes and Beatrice "Renals" and a resident of Strasbourg; Lester was 23, son of Samuel A. Small and Susan E. Clarke and a resident of Prince Albert. His occupation was editor. Both were born in Ontario. Witnesses to their marriage were Mr. and Mrs. S.T. Willson (Mrs. Willson was Eva's sister Frankie) of Strasbourg.

Calvin Wesley Mapes

M, #898, b. 29 July 1856, d. 1915

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 29 July 1856; Niagara District, Canada West
  • Death: 1915; Strasbourg, Saskatchewan
  • Burial: Strasbourg, Saskatchewan
  • Note: Calvin and Beatrice were residents of Markham at the time they married in 1886. Calvin's birthplace was recorded on the marriage registration as Niagara. His occupation was Bar Tender at the time of their marriage, when their first two children were born in Toronto in 1888 (when they lived at 46 Duchess St) and 1889 (154 Jarvis St), and on the 1891 census when the family lived in Ingersoll, Ontario. In 1896 he was said to be a cabinet maker, working for Hault Manufacturing Company and lived on the "north side of Canterbury St., 1 west of Harris St." . His brother Abner was a boarder in Calvin's home.
The family left Ontario and lived in Manitoba in 1901 before moving to Strasbourg, Saskatchewan in 1907. His grandchildren were of the opinion that the Mapes had lived briefly in Virden, Manitoba before settling in Saskatchewan, and that is where they were living at the time of the 1906 census. However, the 1901 census indicates they were living in the city of Brandon, Manitoba and Calvin was an "upholsterer". In his later years Calvin had a furniture store and was an undertaker in Strasbourg, Saskatchewan. Their daughter Eva, my grandmother, always told me her father was a "mortician."
  • Note: Bridget (Beatrice) Rae Reynolds; Mapes, Calvin, Marriage notice, appeared in "Canadian Champion", 1 Jan 1891 , page 3 , column 4 (newspaper). According to the marriage registration, the witnesses at their wedding were Owen James of Scranton, PA and Jennie Morrison of Philadelphia. Calvin's religion was given as Methodist; Bea was Catholic.

Bridget (Beatrice) Rae Reynolds

F, #899, b. 8 May 1862, d. 19 July 1923

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 8 May 1862; Brudenell, Renfrew County, Canada West
  • Death: 19 July 1923; Strasbourg, Saskatchewan
  • Burial: Strasbourg, Saskatchewan
  • Note: Our family had believed Beatrice was born in Ireland, but the census and her marriage record indicate otherwise. Her mother was also born in Canada, but her father was born in Ireland. The Reynolds family was Catholic. Beatrice's granddaughter, Lois Reid, told me Beatrice had worked as a maid at the Governor General's residence in Ottawa prior to her marriage. I think it may have been the Lieutenant Governor's house in Toronto as Toronto was her home at the time of her marriage.
The 1871 census indicates that her name was Bridget, the same as her mother's name. Her name is "Bee" on the marriage registration and on the birth registrations for her two eldest children, Frankie and Oscar. From 1890 onwards she is recorded as Beatrice.
Bridget was living with her father in Brudenell at the time of the 1881 census. It is unknown when, why or how she ended up in Toronto where she married Calvin Mapes in 1886. Bridget/Beatrice and Calvin eventually settled in Strasbourg, Saskatchewan, where they had a furniture store and where Calvin was the undertaker.
Photo of Beatrice with infant daughter Frankie taken by F.W. Micklethwaite, King & Jarvis, Toronto--probably taken approximately December 1888.
  • Note: Calvin Wesley Mapes; Mapes, Calvin, Marriage notice, appeared in "Canadian Champion", 1 Jan 1891 , page 3 , column 4 (newspaper). According to the marriage registration, the witnesses at their wedding were Owen James of Scranton, PA and Jennie Morrison of Philadelphia. Calvin's religion was given as Methodist; Bea was Catholic.
