Note: In 1881 this James and his wife Mary were living in West Gwillimbury, next to his son James Jr. James Sr was listed as a retired farmer, aged 82. James Hughes in the 1871 census in Innisfil Tp, Simcoe County as follows: 70 years old, born Ireland, Anglican, farmer (Div. 1, p. 7); his wife Mary 60 born Ireland; daughter Hannah 22 born Ontario; living on Lot 21, Concession 1; and in 1881 James and Mary are also listed in Innisfil, he then said to be 72. 1861 census, West Gwillimbury, p. 39, lines 40 to 4: James born c. 1799, Mary 1809, James 1841, Mary Ann 1842, Ellen 1845, Hannah 1848, John 1859. This is a bit confusing--not sure if there were two such couples, or only one? I think it likely there was only one couple and somehow they got listed twice in 1881--both in Innisfil and West Gwillimbury--they probably moved about that time. 1861 census, Simcoe county, West Gwillimbury, living in a log house: James 62, Mary 52, Mary Ann 19, James 20, Ellen 16, Hannah 13 and John 2 (son of their late son John, and his wife, Sarah).
The Simcoe County Atlas (1881) lists two James Hughes in Simcoe: one is a farmer on Lot 15, 14th Concession, 100 acres, West Gwillimbury; the other in Vespra tp., Lot 19, 9th Concession, 50 acres.
Cemetery record: St Paul's Anglican, Coulson's Hill, Gwillimbury West Tp., age 84. Will dated 17 Nov. 1882 names children: James, Eliza Nesbitt, Jane Hough [sic--should be Huff], Margaret Ferguson (?), Mary Ann Spence, Hannah Neilly and Eleanor McGivens (the handwriting was very difficult to read) (Will #1894, Simcoe County).
Note: Mary McBride; Found in the Upper Canada marriages: 9 September, 1835, Banns, James HUGHES, widower, and Mary McBRIDE, spinster, both of the township of York. Witnesses, Robert TATE, Andrew PARKER. Also listed in marriages at St James Church, Toronto. Mary signed register with an X.
