Michael Joseph Reynolds
M, #2688
Parents
Biography
- Birth: Renfrew County, Ontario
- Christening: 18 March 1863; Brudenell, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada
- Note: Michael was baptised at Brudenell in March 1863, suggesting his birth year is more likely to be accurate than Bridget's. Believed to be the Michael Reynolds who lived in northern Hastings County (Monteagle and Herschel), 1901 birthdate said to be 10 March 1864, but not proven.
- Note: Margaret Ryan; Ontario marriage reg'n #4664: witnesses were James Ryan and Ellen Mangan, both of Herschel. This record gives Michael's parents as John Reynolds and Mary Barry, suggesting this may be a different Michael. I think it most likely that there is a mistake in the record--however, it may be that this is a different Michael Reynolds.

James Patrick Reynolds
M, #2689, b. July 1870, d. 27 April 1897
Parents
Biography
- Birth: July 1870; Brudenell, Renfrew County, Ontario
- Christening: 10 July 1870; Brudenell, Renfrew County, Ontario
- Death: 27 April 1897; St. Therese, County Terrabonne, Quebec
- Reference Number: B&L1871CEN
- Note: James was 9 months old at the time of the 1871 Census for Brudenell & Lyndoch Townships. There is a substantial gap in age between James and the next youngest child, Michael. There may have been other children who did not survive until 1871.
James was unmarried. Although he died in Quebec, James was said to be a resident of Bromley at the time of his death and his death was registered in Ontario (#22452: occupation CPR employee; cause of death "killed by train"). James was a brakeman with the Canadian Pacific Railway. He did not have a will and his father, John applied to the Surrogate Court, presumably in order to collect the $60. in wages owed by the CPR. Bernard Reynolds (uncle of James and brother of John) signed a statement testifying that John was James' father. The court record indicates that James was also survived by two sisters and two brothers, none of whom was named. The brothers would probably have been Bernard and Michael.

- Burial: Osceola, Renfrew county
- Note: An index to the Tithes Applotments has recently been added to ancestry.com. An ancestry search for Bernard Reynolds anywhere in Ireland reveals two listings: one in Curnabrone (Cornabrone), Fenagh, Leitrim in 1824; the other in Cregga, Kiltrustan, Roscommon in 1842. The National Library shows bernard in Curnabrone in 1833, as well as both Michael and Thomas Reynolds in that townland. It should be noted that this was a land survey and hence those living in towns are not listed. However, given that we have records indicating this family was from Leitrim, it seems likely that the Bernard in Cornabrone was our man. A further search for any Reynolds in Leitrim yields 337 listings. Searching in Fenagh parish yields familiar names in 1824: in Cornabrone townland: Bernard, Michael, Thomas and one without a forename listed; Edward in Kilmacsharwill; James in Killyfannan; another listing for Michael in Drumcarra. In addition, there were two listed in 1833: James in Gowley and Michael in Funshinagh. This suggests to me that Bernard, Thomas and Edward had either died or emigrated between 1824 and 1833, again supporting notion that this is our Bernard.
The Griffiths Valuation, completed in Leitrim in 1857, shows the following Reynolds listings in Cornabrone: John, Michael, Patrick and Thomas. John has the largest holdings of all. Listings for Bernard Reynolds in Leitrim are in the following parishes: Drumreilly (3), Kiltoghert (3), Mohill (2) and Oughteragh (1).
In 1901 the census shows 13 Bernards in Leitrim, ages 5 to 70, all in different households.
The 1852 census for Bromley Twp., Renfrew County lists: Bernard, teacher, age next birthday 59; Mary, 54; Margaret, servant, 24; Winifred, servant, 20; Edward, labourer, 18 (all born in Ireland); Bernard, labourer, 15 (born Canada); James, 12. The census indicates the family lived in a "Shanty." This family must have come to Canada before 1840, but so far we do not know where they lived before purchasing their farm in Bromley Township (Lot 15, Con. 3) in 1851. Although John had already married in 1851, we know from the 1891 census that John and Edward were brothers.
The 1861 census appears to list Bernard twice. In one listing he was visiting Brudenell Twp., Renfrew County, where his age was given as 55. However, his occupation was school teacher, suggesting this is the same Bernard in spite of the age discrepancy. He was listed under the residence of James, clerk, age 21 and his residence was "Upper Canada out of district." In the Bromley 1861 census Bernard (age 67) and Mary (62) lived with their son Edward and his family, on the Lot 15, Con. 3 farm.
From the "Perth Courier", January 22, 1864, p.3: "Died at his residence in Bromley, on the 8th inst., Bernard Reynolds, aged 71 years. For the last 20 years he had been a resident of Bromley, where he held several offices of trust. He leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his loss." . If correct, this means the family settled in Bromley about 1844. The land records for Lot 15, Third concession reveal that Bernard purchased the land 18 March 1851. Bernard's will was dated 14 December 1863 but the transfer of the property to Edward was not registered until 13 January 1885.
In "Founding Families of Bromley Township," Carol Bennett McCuaig says that "Barney Reynolds" was one of the first teachers at Connaught School, along with Mick Mulligan (perhaps an uncle of Bernard and Mary's daughter-in-law, Bridget Mulligan?). Connaught School was united with another school in 1848 (McCuaig, 1996, p. 17). She also reports that Bernard and/or Mary Reynolds were godparents in Osceola of: Anne Murphy in 1847; Daniel McIntomney in 1847; John Daley in 1848, indicating that they were in the district by 1847 (at that time Osceola was served by the priest from Mount St Patrick).
McCuaig also notes that Ann Dooner (1811-1889), wife of Francis Carty of Brudenell, was a native of County Leitrim, Ireland (p. 67). Bernard Dooner, whose wife was a Winnifred Reynolds, may have been a brother or cousin of Ann; as well, Winnifred may have been a sister or cousin of either Bernard or Mary Reynolds. The same first names were common in both the Dooner and Reynolds families. I suspect the Dooners and the Reynolds knew one another in Leitrim and deliberately settled in the same part of Canada when they immigrated. McCuaig notes that the Dooners lived in Pakenham, Lanark county, before coming to Bromley. This may be where Bernard and his family first settled as well, as Perth is also in Lanark and Bernard's death was reported in the Perth newspaper.

Born Connaught, Ireland, came to Canada with parents as a boy and settled in the wicklow neighbourhood of Bromley. Married Margaret Shields, who survives with children: Daniel; James; Mrs. F. Parents
Biography
- Birth: About 1833; Ireland
- Death: 7 June 1898; Bromley Township, Renfrew County, Ontario
- Burial: St. Pius Cemetery, Osceola, Ontario
- Reference Number: SAHAGGERTY
- Note: In the 1861 census Edward and his family lived with his parents on their farm, Lot 15, Third Concession. The 1871 Bromley Census (Schedule 4, p. 2) noted he farmed Lot 15, Third Concession, 300 acres. The 1881 census names Michael as living with Edward's children. I believe this is an error and it was really Edward; the age given is closer to Edward's than to Michael's and the names of the children are the same as those of Edward's children. Bridget, Edward's wife, had apparently died. In 1891 Edward had remarried. Edward's brother John was also living with the family at that time (Renfrew North, Bromley division 2 p12 film T6365).
Edward received patents on Lot 11SE, Second Concession in May 1862; Lot 14E, Fourth Concession in March 1873; and Lot 13W, First Concession in December 1885 (sold in April 1887). According to the land records, Edward's will was dated 9 May 1898 and the land transfer to his son Bernard was registered 16 November 1898. Edward's widow, Joanna Reynolds, released her dower rights to Bernard 9 October, 1900. Edward's daughters, Margaret Donegan and Catherine Durick, also relinquished their claim to the property, which was then sold to Patrick Walsh, widower. Patrick's wife Bridget had been another of Edward's daughters. Edward was said to be 64 at the time of his death.
Death reg'n #18581-1898 indicates he died of "general debility-2 mos" at age 64; his place of birth was said to be Bromley tp, but I believe that is not likely correct, as the 1851 census shows him age 18, born Ireland; the death registration informant was an unnamed son. Photo of tombstone:

- Note: Later records have Bernard born in Ireland, including his tombstone which says he was born in Leitrim; however, the 1851 census indicates he and his younger brother James were both born in Canada. Bernard Sr. was said to have been a teacher, and hence was literate, and as Bernard Jr. was only 12 years old at that time, whereas the older children are listed as born in Ireland, I have judged that this is the most reliable record.
Much of the information on this family was recorded by Ray Burant. His sources included the Brudenell Parish B&M Register and Madawaska St. Matthews Church Register, as well as the 1881 census of the unorganized territories in Renfrew County. Supplementary information was obtained from 1861, 1871, 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses and from Bernard and Jane Lucy's obituaries in the Eganville Leader (January 13, 1913 and January 11, 1911, respectively). 1881 census records are Madawaska East, Unorganized Territory, Renfrew South, Ontario, Canada; 1891 records in North Hastings county, which at that time included Murchison. In 1911 Bernard was listed as the head of a household of 11 men, one of whom was a store keeper. The others, including Bernard, were said to be labourers. Death registration names his parents as Edward Reynolds and Margaret Mulligan--this cannot be correct.

- Note: James was a clerk in Brudenell Twp. on the 1861 census. I have no confirmed record of him after that. There are two Irish James Reynolds in the Ontario 1871 Census index whose ages fit, but both gave their religions as Church of England, rather than Catholic. One was born in Ireland, the other in Canada. The former was a farmer in Peel Twp., Wellington County. The latter was a lawyer in Prescott Twp., Grenville County. In 1881 there was also a James Reynolds in Quebec, but again, he was Anglican rather than Catholic. There was a James Reynolds who was a laborer living in Fitzroy tp, Carleton county in 1891. He was said to be 40, born in Ireland, single and lived in a log cabin.

James Clarke
M, #2695, b. 4 December 1826, d. 22 October 1889
Parents
Biography
- Birth: 4 December 1826; Maryborough, Queens County, Ireland
- Christening: 4 February 1827; Church of Ireland, Maryborough
- Death: 22 October 1889; Peel Twp, Wellington County, Ontario
- Burial: Greenfield Cemetery, Peel Twp, Wellington County
- Note: At the time of his marriage in 1848 and until sometime after Edward was christened in late 1850, James was a farmer in Meelick, Queens County, Ireland. Meelick is located on the south edge of the modern town of Portlaoise (previously called Maryborough), County Laois. In 1850 the only James Clarke listed in the Griffiths Valuation for Queen's county is James H. Clarke, Esq., listed as the landlord for a William Clarke, Esq., for land Block 11 (about 18 acres), Maryborough townland. I cannot find any Griffiths record of a James Clarke occupying a house at that time. When Elizabeth was christened in 1852 James was said to be a "householder" and resident of Maryborough. A year later the family emigrated to Canada.
James and his family first settled lived in Garafraxa Twp of Wellington County, Ontario. At the time of the 1861 census they lived on Lot 17, 6th Concession. James was the enumerator for that census. In 1864 James Clarke purchased the south half of Lot 12, 17th Concession of the adjoining Peel Twp. A year later, he sold that property to Eliza Greenham, his widowed sister, although it appears that the Clarkes continued to live on the property and the Greenhams never did live there. The following is a transcript of the land record of that sale [note, words in square brackets are those I had big problems with--they may not be correct--the handwriting was very, very difficult to read from the microfilm]:
#23500, registered 1st of May 1865:
"A Memorial to be Registered of an Indenture made the Eighteenth day of January one thousand eight hundred and sixty five, in [pursuance of the act] to facilitate the conveyance of Real Property.
Between James Clarke of the Township of Garafraxa in the County of Wellington and Province of Canada [yeoman] of the First Part, Susanah Clarke wife of the said Party of the First Part, of the Second Part and Eliza Greenham of the Township of Nichol in the County and Province aforesaid Widow of the Third Part.
Whereby it is Witnessed that the said party of the First Part in consideration of the Sum of Two thousand Dollars of lawful money of Canada, [then] paid by the said party of the Third Part to the said party of the First Part thereby acknowledged, did grant onto the said party of the third part her heirs and assigns forever, all and singular, [that contain parcel or tract] of land [?] and being in the Township of Peel in the County of Wellington and Province of Canada being Known and described as the South half of lot number Twelve concession Seventeen in the said Township of Peel, County and province aforesaid, containing [be the same] one hundred acres, [?] more or less, subject to a mortgage held by the [?] Loan Company of the sum of one thousand dollars.
To have and to hold the said above granted promised unto the said party of the Third Part--her heirs and assigns, [toward] her and their sale and [?] use forever.
[?] said Indenture is witnessed by John William Petrie of the Village of Fergus in the County of Wellington and Province of Canada Conveyances.
And this memorial is [?] required to be registered by [?] the said Granter [?] named.
Witness my hand and Seal, the Eighteenth day of January in the year the Lord one thousand eight hundred and Sixty five."
Signed and Sealed in the presence of
Jno Petrie signed James Clarke
James Wilkinson
In 1892, the registered owner of the land was James' second son, Edward. When Edward died in 1900, the property was left to his wife. The following is the list of owners of the property during the time the Clarkes were living there.
Greenfield Cemetery records and a Surrogate Court petition filed by his widow indicate that James died October 22, 1889. I have scanned the registration records themselves, but have not been able to find the death registration for our James. It appears that his death was never registered.
- Note: Susanna Esther Meredith; 1861 Census gives marriage date of 1847; however, parish register in Ireland indicates they married in 1848. Witnesses at the marriage included John Meredith.

On the 1901 census Susanna was living with her son and daughter-in-law, Jeremiah and Harriet Clarke. They were in an eight room house, on the south half of lot 12, con, 17 (100 acres). Unlike most families, Susanna, not Jeremiah, was identified as the head of the household! (Peel Tp, div. 3, p. 6). The 1908 Wellington County Atlas shows Jeremiah still living there and a school house also on that lot.
Obituary Arthur Enterprise, Thursday, March 9, 1905: Susanna Meredith relict of the late James Clarke, passed away in death on Sunday, March, the 5th, 1905, at the home of her son, Jeremiah M.
