John Haggerty

M, #8392, b. about 1855, d. 8 March 1918

Biography

  • Birth: About 1855; Ireland or Napanee, Ontario
  • Death: 8 March 1918; Thurlow tp, Hastings county, Ontario
  • Note: I have two records which seem to apply to the same man, but I cannot place him as a member of my Haggerty family. In 1911 he is one of a great many "inmates" in a "House of Refuge" in Thurlow tp, Hastings county, and is said to have been born in Ireland. His age was 55 and he was a widower. His death registration (#19681) places him still in the House of Refuge and says he was born in Napanee and was 64 years old. Parents are said to be John Haggerty and Sarah Brown. The informant was T. E. Wilson, who was the superintendent of the House of Refuge.

James Webb

M, #8396, b. about 1831, d. 24 November 1884

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1831; East Lackawannack Tp, Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Death: 24 November 1884; Mercer County
  • Note: Placement speculative. Living with Nancy, Sarah and George in Coolspring in 1850. In 1860 James (25) was living with Nancy (27) who was listed as a housekeeper--I assume this was his sister Nancy. In 1870: Webb James 41 m, w, Farmer 5000 1055 PA, f. f. b., m.f.b., male citizen over 21. One son, Samuel, age 7. Jane Alexander age 50 was in the household and said to be a housekeeper. James' wife must have died before 1850 and his sister Jane came to be their housekeeper. In 1880 James was 49 and farming in Coolspring tp, and his son Samuel, 17, was living with him.
The IGI lists George Webb having a son James born East Lackawannock Tp about 1834.
The 1873 map of landowners in Cool Spring shows James Webb farm between Alexanders and Boyds, supporting speculations on this family and its relationships.

Family: Isabella McKay (b. about 1837, d. 6 February 1864)

John Webb

M, #8397, b. 1815, d. 1884

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 1815; Ireland
  • Death: 1884; Pennsylvania
  • Burial: Presbyterian Cemetery, Jackson Center, Mercer County
  • Note: Placement speculative. John was a labourer living in Mercer in 1850. His age (35) and Irish birth suggest he was probably George Webb's son John. John was in Jackson Tp. in 1870--location shown on 1873 map: http://www.rootsweb.com/pamercer/PA/PL/Maps/1873/jacksontwp.htm.
In 1870 John was listed as a farmer owning real estate worth $10,000 and other assets valued at $1530. Both of his parents were foreign born. In 1880 he and his wife "Eliza", ages 64 and 56, were living in Jackson tp. next to their daughter Amy Moon.
Cottage Methodist Episcopal Church was organized before 1856, by Rev. Dillon Pearson, in what was known as Cape-Horn School-house. The original members were George Jones and wife, John Webb and wife, Mrs. Doratha Pete, Mary Black, Rev. Robert Boyd and John Dight and wife. The following summer a small church edifice was constructed, costing about $300. It was subsequently sold to John Wilson for a dwelling, and on the same site, two miles west of Jackson Centre, on the Franklin and Mercer road, in 1870, a fine frame building was erected, costing $2,000. (History of Mercer County, 1888, page 544)
Cemetery transcript gives dates as 1815 - 1894.
  • Note: Elizabeth Ann; In 1850 had one child, one year old.

Family: Elizabeth Ann (b. about 1824, d. 18 April 1893)

Nancy Webb

F, #8398, b. about 1828

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1828; Pennsylvania
  • Note: The latest confirmed record I have found for Nancy is the 1860 census, when she was living with her brother James in Coolspring tp. Possibly the Nancy Webb, age 40, who was a housekeeper to George Weiser in Union tp, Mifflin county, PA in 1870?

Sarah Webb

F, #8399, b. about 1832

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1832; Pennsylvania
  • Note: In 1850 Sarah was living with her sister and two brothers (Nancy, James and George) in what must have been their late parents' home. Sarah Edwards living with Amelia Sherriff in Turnbull County Ohio in 1900 may be this Sarah. Her birthdate given as July 1845 age 64 [?]. Both were widows who had not had any children.

Family: Edwards

George Webb

M, #8400, b. about 1835

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1835; Pennsylvania
  • Note: Placement speculative. George was attending school in 1870 [this doesn't make any sense--possibly s/b 1850?].
There are two George Webbs listed in the 1910 census whose ages suggest they could be this George--the first listed is considered most likely:
George L Webb, 77, of Millvale, Allegheny County (Enum. Dist. 163, Visit 115); wife Amanda 76, daughters Alice 40 and Melissa 36, all born PA; and George Webb, 75, of Philadelphia (Enum. Dist. 331, Visit 202); son Harry 31, grandchild Edith 13, all born PA.
In 1850 George Webb, 15, was enumerated in both Mercer County (30 Aug) and in the household of Jane and John Alexander in Allegheny City, PA (18 Oct). Like John, George was a carpenter.
In 1860: Household of George Webb
(City,County,State) Age in 1860 Estimated Birth Year Birthplace Gender
George Webb, Allegheny Ward 2, Allegheny, PA 25 1834 Pennsylvania Male
Amanda Webb, Allegheny Ward 2, Allegheny, PA 24 1835 Pennsylvania Female
John Webb, Allegheny Ward 2, Allegheny, PA 4 1855 Pennsylvania Male
William Webb, Allegheny Ward 2, Allegheny, PA 1 1858 Pennsylvania Male
