Note: Biography of nephew Samuel Webb indicates that he lived in Pittsburg with his aunts Jane and Amelia from 1871 to 1875. The 1850 census has Amelia aged 21 living with John and Jane Alexander in Allegheny City. In 1860 "Permelia Webb," age 23 was living with the Alexanders. In 1880 the widowed Amelia Sherriff lived with her sister Jane Alexander, also a widow, in Pittsburgh. Amelia's age was then said to be 40.

Note: IGI indicates that the wife of Daniel Nelson was Mary Webb, daughter of George Webb. The following children are named in the IGI, with their estimated birth dates: Nancy 1845, Mary A. 1847, Harriet 1849, Charles 1851, Frank 1853, Margaret 1855, Melissa 1858, Catharine 1860, George 1863, Caroline 1864 and Rebecca 1865. The children I have listed for Mary and Daniel were originally taken from the 1870 census transcripts posted to the Mercer County web site.

Biography of nephew Samuel Webb indicates that he lived in Pittsburg with sisters Jane and Amelia from 1871 to 1875.

1852 Pittsburgh directory shows for Allegheny county John Alexander, a carpenter, living on Poplar Lane. Couldn't find him in either 1857 or 1864 directories
1860 Census, still in Allegheny:
John Alexander 37; Jane 35, George 10, "Permelia Webb" 23.
In 1870 Jane was back in Mercer County (age 50) living with her brother James and his son Samuel as their housekeeper. In 1880 she and Amelia were again living together, now on 43rd Street in Pittsburg.

Note: 1860 Census records name as Mary Ann; was attending school in 1860. A Haggerty family story was that Amelia Haggerty Webb had a grand-daughter who had married a man named Moon. John Moon's farm was located next to John Webb's farm according to the 1873 map of Jackson Tp. On the 1870 census John Moon's wife was identified as "Anna A." I think there is a good chance that Anna A. Moon was the eldest daughter of John Webb, but this is far from proven. In 1870 Anna A. Moon was 22 years old and her father, but not her mother, was foreign born.

Note: 1870 census: Webb Samuel age 7, male, white, attending school, born PA. In 1910 Samuel's age was given as 48. Also in his Mercer household were "Aunt Anelia [sic] Sherriff" age 86, along with wife Mary 43, and daughters Marie 10, and Francis 7 (Enumeration District: 0165 Visit: 0101). In 1920 Samuel (56) and Mary *54) were still living in Mercer; Samuel was a Delivery man for a grocery store and Mary was a Dressmaker.

SAMUEL M. WEBB, farmer, post-office Mercer, was born March 16, 1863, on the farm where he now resides. His father, James Webb, was born on the farm now owned and occupied by B. A. Williams, in East Lackawannock Township. He was a brother of Mrs. Daniel Nelson, of Mercer. He [James] married Belle McKay, who died in 1864, leaving one child, Samuel M. After the death of his mother our subject lived with his aunt, Eliza McLain, of Mercer, until five years old, and until eight with his father, when he was sent to Pittsburgh, where he attended school for four years, making his home with his aunts, Jane and Amelia, sisters of his father. He then joined his father on the farm, they doing their own housework, until November 24, 1884, when the father died, and our subject was married December 25, the same year, to Mary Hunter, daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth (Alexander) Hunter. Her mother died when she was six months old, leaving four children: Ida, George, Mina and Mary. Her father was again married, to Elizabeth McMillan, and had four children: Mattie, Louis, Bertha and Clara. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel M. Webb have two children: Nannie and Elva. Mr. Webb is a Republican, a good farmer, and buys and sells stock.

Note: In 1840 there was a "Jnos. Barber" living in Coolspring Tp, aged 20 - <30. The same household had 3 females: 1 was <5, 1 was 15 - <20, the other aged 50 - <60. Probably these were Catherine and John and their daughter Mary Anne, plus John's mother.

The only John Barber in 1850 was John S. Barber aged 30, living in the town of Mercer. John was a "molder." Other members of that household were: Susanna M, 28; Lydia 3; Susanna E. 1 month; Mary Anne 11, and Catherine A. 9. It appears that John remarried after Catherine's death, probably about 1845/46.

In 1870 John S. Barber was again listed in Coolspring, aged 52, born PA, farmer worth $960, and his father was foreign born. Other members of the household were Margaret, aged 60 and Adam H. aged 17.

In the 1870 Census transcript, the following entry is listed in Lake Tp:
"Bachel*, John, 38 yrs, m, w, Farmer, 3500 400, PA, citiz, Remark: appears to be "Bachelor"." Other members of this family were: Mary A. 37; Mary J. 11; Jonathan 9; Thomas 5 and Caroline 8 months.

In 1870 John was a farmer in Lake Tp, Mercer County. His assets were $3500 and $400. He is also listed in the 1860 census index (Lake Tp, p. 378) where his last name is spelled Batchelder. The name is spelled "Bachelder" in the Boyd Cemetery.
