Richard Bateman must have been one of the earliest settlers in Middlesex County, Ontario. He filed a petition for 100 acres of land in 1832; duties of settlement were performed and the oath of allegiance taken. Land granted 26 Feb. 1847, Ekfrid Tp, Middlesex County. Canadian census records indicate that Richard and Maria lived in Metcalfe Tp, Middlesex County in January 1852 (Concession 12, N 1/2 Lot 10) and Moore Tp, Lambton County in April 1861. Birth locations of children indicate that Richard lived in Canada West until after 1862, then lived in Iowa, before moving on to Kansas by 1867.
