Elenor (Ellen) Chisholm
F, #1937, b. about 1830
Parents
Biography
- Birth: About 1830; Canada
- Marriage: 11 January 1844; Adam Haggerty; St. Thomas Church, Belleville, Ontario
- Marriage: 17 June 1873; Nesbert Reid; Sidney tp, Hastings county, Ontario
- Note: In the Vital Statistics record of their son James' marriage in 1875, Elenor's name is recorded as "Ellen Chisholm." Their religion is given as Methodist. In the Haggerty book FHH gave her name as "Helen."
The 1871 census has a record of an Elenor Haggerty, widow, aged 40, in Huntingdon Twp. She is recorded as being born in Ontario and of Scottish origins. This record had me puzzled for some time, as Adam and Elenor's first child was born in 1844. However, subsequently I have found other records confirming this as her age--for example, in the 1881 census when she was the wife of Nesbit Reid, her age was listed as 49. It thus appears that she married and had her first child at the age of 14.
In 1840 Adam Haggerty took over 100 acres of land (Rawdon Twp., Concession 2, Lot 1, West 1/2) purchased by his father a few days earlier. February 27, 1866 "Elenor Hagerty, widow and James Haggerty and other Infants Dependant" were granted the land by a "Vesting Order," according to the Lands Records, transcribed by Mattie McCurdy.
