George Hagerty

- Note: George was a shoemaker and resident of Clonakilty when he married and was also a shoemaker in the US, according to the census.
George was witness to a marriage in Ireland in July 1859. He, Charlotte and their son John emigrated to the US about 1868 (some records say 66 or 67), settling in New York City. In 1870 George was said to be 35, in 1880 he is 36, in 1892 he is 54, in 1900 his birth date is said to be September 1827, but his age was 62, suggesting the birth year may have been 1827? In 1910 he was 73 and still a shoemaker, and in 1915 he was 77 and retired. That is the last census record I have found for him, suggesting he died between the 1915 state census and the 1920 federal census. In 1915 George and Charlotte were living with their son Thomas and his family. Name spelled either Haggerty or Hagerty in US census records.
- Note: Charlotte Holtsbaum; Witnesses were W. Holtsbaum and John Heagerty. 1900 census says they had been married for 40 years--evidently either rounding off or faulty memories?

Clonakilty Haggertys

- Note: The people listed in this record as children of "Clonakilty Haggertys" were not all sisters and brothers. Their parents are unknown. However, they are all recorded in Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland in the 1700s and 1800s. The registration district of Clonakilty includes Kilmeen parish at its northern edge. Northwest of Kilmeen is Dunmanway district--the FamilySearch site shows only one record for Dunmanway district. Curiously, nothing shows for the Bandon district?
It is presumed that these Haggertys of Clonakilty were all related and this artificial "father" was created solely to connect the them to one another in my records. There were also Haggertys in neighbouring parts of Cork: see Bandon Haggertys, James Haggertie of Kilmeen Parish, Rathclaren Haggertys and miscellaneous Haggertys--all of these families were probably related.
In cases where only a marriage date is known, the birthdate was estimated from the marriage date--for women approximately 20 to 25 years earlier; for men 25 to 30 years. It is likely that many of those for whom we have a marriage date were also baptised here. However, as the parents of marriage partners are not named until 1847, and the ages of the marriage partners were not given, we cannot unequivocally connect most of these people across more than two generations. Possible connections are sometimes suggested in the individual notes.

1850 marriage record for John Robert Hagerty names his father as William, weaver in Clonakilty. He was probably the William who was the father of the Sarah who married Thomas Bennett in 1839? See separate entry.

In the 1911 census Jane is a widow living in Deptford South, London, England, age 80, had given birth to 10 children, 8 of them still living. Also in the household were sons James, 48, bootmaker, single; George, 36, post office clerk, single; daughter Sarah 33, single; and grandson Frederick George Carrington, 14, scholar. Sons John and James were born in Clonakilty, the other known children in London. In the 1911 census there is an Eliza Hegarty, 44, single, born Clonakilty, living with a Bishell family in Hertfordshire and employed as a cook. She could well be the missing 8th child?
Probably the Jane Hegarty whose death was registered Greenwich District 1916, age 86.

Ages in census: 25 in 1870, 35 in 1880, 49 in 1892, 72 in 1915; not found in 1920 census--probably died before then? 1900 census indicates three of her five children were still living. I only have names of three.
Ancestry shows Charlotte sailing from N Yk to Queenstown, Ireland, arr 15 July 1892, age 49; no other Haggertys in the passenger list.
