Ross parish Haggertys

• Note: At this time I have only been able to review the Rosscarbery registers from 1685 to 1820--I'm hoping to have an opportunity to review later registers in November 2013.
  The parish register for the C of I Cathedral in Rosscarbery shows Hegartys were there from at least 1784. There are baptism records for for several Hagerty families, living in Derry and Tralong. In some cases I may show two different listings for what is actually a single person--comments in notes will address this dilemma. For example, there is a John Hegerty who must have been born before 1770 and a John Hegarty who must have been born before 1777. These could very well be the same man. Nonetheless, I think it's highly likely that the various protestant Hegartys in Ross parish must be a single family. I also think they are closely related to those in nearby Clonakilty and Kilmeen--hopefully we will find someone from this line to participate in the Haggerty Y- DNA project?

John Hagerty

• Note: Records for this family are from the marriage and baptism records in the register for Ross Cathedral, transcribed online at: , accessed July 2013. The marriage of John and Catherine Miles is the first Hagerty record in the register. Next were 1791 and 1793 baptisms of James and Elizabeth, chlldren of John "Hegerty," assumed to be this John. No baptisms for any Hagerty children between 1786 and 1791.
  Marriage record indicates the James who married Elizabeth Wagner was the son of John, presumably to distinguish him from another James--perhaps a cousin? Baptism records for children of James and Eliza Hegarty of Tralong could be grandchildren of this John and Catherine.

In such cases the children were later "received" into the church. Duke and Marmaduke were often alternative names--likely that this child could have been known as Marmaduke in other records. May have been the Marmaduke who is listed in Kilkerranmore parish on the tithes and griffiths.
