John Haggerty
M, #54, b. 26 September 1871, d. 13 May 1943
Parents
Biography
- Birth: 26 September 1871; Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario
- Death: 13 May 1943; Stony Beach, Saskatchewan
- Note: Family Bible record, transcribed by FHH, gives birth date of September 26, but their daughter Alta Read gave me September 24 as John's birth date. However, his Ontario birth registration confirms the date as the 26th.
From "Prairie Sojourn":
"Arrived in Belle Plaine Easter Sunday, 1900, to take up homestead 4 miles north of Belle Plaine (NW 20-17-23). Winter of 1902/03 returned to Ontario and married Jennie Marshman Feb. 25, 1903, then returned to Saskatchewan. Jennie died in 1911, and John later returned to Ontario again, and married Annie Pulling, who died in 1915. John's third wife was Janet Gilchrist, sister of William Gilchrist. They married June 14, 1916 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan."
1901 census has John, brother George and Aunt Jane living in Fairville, Assiniboia. Their birth dates are all incorrect. Link to images of Saskatchewan land grants:

In October 1926 John, with his wife and son Gordon, crossed the border into the USA in order to visit John's sister, Mrs. Mary Gregg of Long Beach, California. It was noted in April 1927 that he had not "departed." I suspect he simply neglected to check in when he returned to Canada?
- Note: Jennie Marshman; Marriage registration #12276
- Note: Annie Elizabeth Pulling; Witnesses were Annie Dunbar and Kate Robinson (reg'n #9383). Address where marriage took place also listed as home address of witnesses.

Amongst the papers left by Martha Bateman and now in the possession of Marjorie Haggerty (Ford) is a poem, handwritten on a paper edged in black:
A Farewell
Farewell parents, you will miss me,
When the stars are shining bright,
You will often think of Willie,
When you sit alone at night.
But remember I am happy,
In the presence of the Lord,
And when death has called you dear ones,
May our union be restored.
Friends and school mates you will miss me,
When you all together meet,
You perhaps will think of Willie,
When you see his vacant seat.
But I've gone to swell the numbers,
Of the great angelic throng,
And when death has called you loved ones,
You will meet your absent one.
Though I'm first to break the number,
Of your family, parents dear,
Yet my happy spirit is yonder,
Where we all must soon appear.
Look to Jesus, my dear loved ones,
Trusting in a Saviour's love,
We may all unbroken mingle,
In that blessed home above.
Written on the death of Willie Haggerty,
who died October 19th, 1893
by a friend.

Mary E. Haggerty
F, #57, b. 14 May 1878, d. 18 November 1979
Parents
Biography
- Birth: 14 May 1878; Caradoc Twp, Middlesex Co, Ontario
- Death: 18 November 1979; Solano, CA
- Note: In 1901, Fred and Mary and their infant son George were living at Old Wives Lake, Assiniboia, Northwest Territories (later Saskatchewan), in the same household as Fred's parents, George and Elizabeth Williams. In the 1906 census Fred, Mary and children are listed in a separate household: Fred 29, Mary 28; George 5; Edith 3; and Walter said to have been born in October 1905. Living at section 30, tp. 14, range 29, W2 in Saskatchewan. Moose Jaw is shown as their postal address. They had 150 horses, 1 milk cow and 1 other cattle. All of these children were born in the North West Territories, in an area that is now Saskatchewan, but apparently their births were never registered, as I am unable to find any records of their births. The family is shown as living at 165 River Street East in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1916.
In 1922 Mary was listed with her son George Williams at 728 Arizona Avenue, Los Angeles county, California. Mary was registered as a "Socialist." In the 1930 census both Henry and Mary are in Los Angeles. Mary's daughter, Edith "Delmage" and her daughter Mary are in the household. Henry and Mary are said to have immigrated to the US in 1923, which doesn't seem right to me if she was in LA in 1922? Mary was said to have been 22 when she first married.
In October 1926 Mary's brother John, with his wife and son Gordon, crossed the border into the USA in order to visit John's sister, Mrs. Mary Gregg of Long Beach, California.
I found a note in some family records saying that Mary and her daughter Edith came to Vancouver, BC, and boarded with her sister-in-law, Ruth Haggerty--I suspect this info came from their niece, Georgie Haggerty, but am not sure.
In 1940 Mary and James appear to be enumerated in Philadelphia: James A. Greig 73, Mary 67; his occupation Inspector, Locative [locomotive?] Works. There is also a son Howard Greig, 31, born Japan in the household--James's son by his first marriage?
In addition to the California death registration, Mary's death was also registered in Bremerton, Kitsap, Washington State (from ancestry.com). I know this was for the same person, as her parents were named. Perhaps she actually died in Washington, but was a resident of California, so her death was also registered there? Odd?
- Note: Alfred (Fred) Williams; Ontario marriage reg'n #10491: witnesses Swanton Haggerty and Lillie M. McAlpine, both of Caradoc.

Wedding notice from the Strathroy Age, 1908:
At Belle Plaine, Sask., on Monday, Dec. 14, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Haggerty was the scene of a very pretty wedding, when their daughter Nina Esther, became the bride of Wm. Gilchrist. The bride was assisted by her sister, Miss Sara, while J. Tucker Graham acted as groomsman. The groom's present to the bride was a gold watch and chain. The gifts were numerous and costly, showing the high esteem in which the young couple are held by their many friends.

She also gave me the names of several of the surviving members of her family. At that time, only she and Earl were still living of her generation. Becky was still very alert, although she was close to 87 years old. Her father survived to almost 98 years of age.
Don and Becky Ross were married at St. John's Anglican Church in Moose Jaw. Witnesses at their marriage were Margaret A. Kerr and Wellington Wallace.
