Clarence Melbert Poole

M, #4153, b. 4 August 1879, d. 13 May 1949

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 4 August 1879; London, Ontario
  • Death: 13 May 1949; Bowen Island, British Columbia
  • Note: Ontario birth registration #17527 indicates "Melbert Poole" was born in London, Ontario 4 Aug 1879, not in Mount Forest in 1880 as family records had indicated. The 1881 census gives his name as Clarence. In 1901 Clarence was living with his parents and brother in Mount Forest. He had been employed as a grocery clerk for the previous 12 months and had earned $350. The 1901 census gives his birth date as 4 October 1879.
Clarence and Nettie Poole went to Vancouver for their honeymoon and stayed. Clarence was a long time employee of Woodward's in Vancouver.

Charles Michael Poole

M, #4155, b. 23 November 1835, d. 29 March 1902

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 23 November 1835; England
  • Marriage: 11 April 1861; Martha J. Smith; Stratford, Canada West (Ontario)
  • Death: 29 March 1902; Mount Forest, Ontario
  • Note: Middle name probably Michael. In 1871 and 1881 the Poole family lived in London, Ontario, where Charles was employed as a "miller" (1871 Census, London ON, Ward 1, p.46; 1881 Census, London ON, Ward 3, Div. 2, p. 69). In 1891 they had moved to Mount Forest where Charles was a miller. In 1901 his occupation was listed as "Miller, R", probably indicating that he was retired--he was not employed that year. Charles came to Canada in 1856.
Death reg'n #27228-1902: age 66 yrs, 4 mos; lived Lot 13, Fergus E, Mount Forest; cause of death chronic bronchitis; informant G. F. Chapman [his son-in-law].
  • Note: Martha J. Smith; Marriage of Michael Poole and Martha Smith must be this couple. Both were residents of Stratford; Michael age 27, born England, son of Robert and Mary Poole; Martha age 17, born Canada, dau of Joseph and Ann Smith. However, the 1861 census shows Martha J. Smith, age 16, resident of Wallace tp, Perth county, in household headed by William J. Smith and Jane A. Smith--perhaps both parents went by their middle names? All in all, more than a little confusing!

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 18 June 1844; Canada West (Ontario)
  • Death: 21 February 1918; Vancouver, British Columbia
  • Note: In 1911 Martha was living with the family of her son, Clarence Poole, in Vancouver. There her initials appear to be M. J. and it says she was born in England and immigrated in 1860. I suspect the informant was confusing her birth place with that of her late husband, Charles. In both 1881 and 1901 censuses, Martha is said to have been born in Canada. She died in 1918 in Point Grey (Vancouver), BC death reg'n #1918-09-154413.
The 1852 census shows an 8-year old Martha Smith, daughter of Joseph and Anne Smith, living in Blanchard, Perth county. Joseph was a farmer, aged 25, born England.
  • Note: Charles Michael Poole; Marriage of Michael Poole and Martha Smith must be this couple.

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 1815; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 9 December 1894; Jackson County, Kansas
  • Note: Sarah's tombstone indicates she was aged 78 yrs, 11 mos and 27 days when she died.
Henderson (1933) indicated that Sarah and her husband Charles were second cousins. If so, Sarah's father Matthew and Charles' father, Swanton would be first cousins, not brothers.
Sarah's Obituary: "Sarah Bateman was born in Bandon, Ireland, 1815, and died at her home in Jackson county, Kansas, December 9, 1894. Her family emigrated from Ireland when she was about two years old. It required six weeks to make the trip across the Atlantic; and at last landed in St. Johns Harbor, New Brunswick. From there they moved to Fredericktown [sic] where they resided about seventeen years. The family consisted of eight children--two boys and six girls. From this place they moved to Coshocton county, Ohio. She was united in marriage to Charles Bateman in 1839. They remained in Ohio about fourteen years, in which time four children were born to them, namely John Henry, William, George and Thomas. From this home they moved to Canada [Ontario], remaining there about five years. Three other children born to them--Robert, Jane and Edward. In moving from this home they took up their residence in Minnesota, but remained there but six months; and from there they moved to Marion county, Iowa, but remained there but one year, when they came to Kansas, locating in Jackson county, at their present home where they resided until the end of her earthly pilgrimage where, on Sunday last, December 9, 1894, she fell asleep in Jesus, surrounded by her family. The companion of her youth, who now bears the burden of eighty-three years, was still by her side as she passed the swelling of the Jordan to the happy home beyond. With a strong trusting faith, he is pressing on and by and bye will pass beyond the coils of sorrow into the clear light of eternal peace, and join her in the anthems of eternal victory.
"In youth before her marriage, she united with the church, so at last she has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church about sixty years.
"This has been her home for thirty-seven years, and in this residence of over a third of a century you as neighbors have known her as a neighbor, a friend and a member of the church. Cherish all her motherly virtues, emulate every good noble trait, and let your life be better because she lived and may her living and her death help you to see and know more of our heavenly Father's love,

John Henry Bateman

M, #4175, b. 12 April 1840, d. 2 January 1901

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 12 April 1840; Coshocton County, Ohio
  • Death: 2 January 1901; Jackson County, Kansas
  • Burial: Holton Cem., Holton, Kansas
  • Note: IGI marriage record gives middle initial of F.

The Holton Recorder, January 10, 1901(extracted by Kathie Simon):

John Henry Bateman was born in Coshocton, Ohio, April 12, 1840, and died at his home in Liberty township in this county, January 2, 1901, aged 60 years, 8 months and 20 days. When nine years old he with his parents and family removed to Canada, where they lived until the fall of 1855, when they moved to Minnesota, where they lived during the fall and winter following. From the spring of 1856 until the spring of 1857 they lived in Marion county, Iowa, and then came to this county and settled on the old Bateman homestead two and a half miles north of this city.
John Henry worked on the farm with his parents until the breaking out of the war, when he enlisted in the home militia and went to Fort Leavenworth where he tried to enlist in the United States service, but was rejected because of the loss of two fingers and the crippled condition of a third on his right hand. In the spring of 1862 he drove an ox team with a load of flour and bacon through to Colorado, and remained in that territory, California and Arizona most of the time in the latter territory, for the ensuing four and a half years, returning to this county in the fall of 1866, where he has since lived. In the fall of 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary F. Dooley, his now bereaved widow. To this union were born six children. Two little boys and one baby girl died in infancy. The other three, Charlie aged 29, Clara aged 20 and Scottie aged 12, survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father.
While living in Iowa at the age of 16 he was converted and joined the Methodist church of which he remained a loyal, faithful, and consistent member until his death.
As a citizen and neighbor Mr. Bateman stood deservedly high. He had the happy faculity[sic] of making everybody his friend and winning and retaining the respect and entire confidence of all who knew him. He was one of the best and most successful farmers in the county. As a result of his industry and good management he owned at his death several hundred acres of excellent land, improved with one of the finest and best farm houses in the county, a barn that cost between two and three thousand dollars, a large, fine orchard and many head of fine stock. Besides the farm property he was a stockholder and director of the State Bank of Holton.
As a church member he was zealous and liberal, always ready to do his share of the work and bear his share of the expense.
In the year 1878 he was elected county commissioner for the one year term, and in 1879 he was re-elected for a three years’ term. It was conceded by all and is yet by those who were at that time conversant with county affairs that he made one of the best commissioners the county ever had and he could have been re-elected almost without opposition if he had allowed his name to again go before the people, but he felt that he could not spare the time from his farm any longer. Since then he has been solicited at various times to allow the use of his name for county treasurer and other responsible positions, but he has firmly but respectfully declined. He seemed to have an aversion for political strife which all the persuasion of his friends failed to overcome.
His health commenced to fail early last spring, when something like bright’s disease seemed to fasten upon him. During the summer he was not able to do much work and he gradually grew weaker as the disease progressed and several weeks before his death, although still able to be around, he gave up all hope of recovery. He was calm and cheerful through it all and arranged his business affairs with the same judgment and coolness as had always characterized his business transactions. To all appearance death had no terrors for him and when the time came he entered the “valley and shadow” with as much calmness and assurance as the brave soldier marches into battle.
The funeral which occurred at the residence on Friday, the 4th, was a quiet affair, devoid of all pomp or parade. The neighbors, from quite a considerable section of the county, assembled. A male quartet, consisting of M. D. Asher, W. A. Smyth, H. C. Tucker and Guy Asher sang several appropriate selections. Rev. McKean of the Presbyterian church led in prayer, and Rev. J. B Vernon, Mr. Bateman’s pastor, delivered a brief but appropriate funeral discourse. The pallbearers were John Q. Myers, J. W. Lamb, A. Bumgardner, George Haag, Joseph Hill and M. M. Beck.
The body of our deceased friend was laid to rest in the Holton cemetery, only the simple but impressive funeral ritual of the Methodist church being read at the grave by Rev. Vernon. (Extracted and transcribed by Kathie Simon)
