Milton T. Doherty
M, #7907, b. 1862, d. 17 June 1941
Biography
- Death: 17 June 1941; Gloucester County, New Brunswick
- Note: Notes from Bateman family reunion in Ontario:
Milton Doherty recalled some interesting incidents from his trip to Skagway and the Yukon when he accompanied Wm. Bateman and Isaac Roy. They went by train to Vancouver and by boat to Skagway taking three months to make the journey. They had to cross Miles Canyon, which had never been crossed without an Indian pilot. They were the first white men to cross Miles Canyon. They made six boats by cutting the lumber from the trees with a hand rip saw. Some of them were stolen. At last they made one and crossed the canyon with William in the bow and Roy in the stern. Boat went at the rate of a mile a minute. They proceeded to the gold fields at Dawson where they staked their claims and registered. They brought back many souvenirs among them a necklace of gold nuggets to which is attached a miniature miner’s outfit, a placer pan, a pick, a shovel and a sleuce [sic] box which Cousin Milton wears as a watch chain.
