  • Note: Esther Bateman, widow age 68, was living in Bathurst in 1871. I was originally given information that Esther died in 1886 and was buried in the "Old Anglican" Churchyard, but I believe that record was in error, and that Hester Bateman, aged 76 and buried in 1879 was probably this woman.

George Haggerty

M, #7632, b. about 1690, d. 26 January 1750

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1690; County Cork, Ireland
  • Marriage: 31 January 1714; Martha Tate; Ballymodan Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 26 January 1750; Ballymodan Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Note: There are death records for two George Haggertys at about the same time--the other date was 16 Sep 1743. It is uncertain which George is which, and I may have combined information on the families of both for one person. The baptism dates for the children suggest they could be two separate families. Alternatively, one of the deaths could be for someone of a different generation--either an older generation (father or uncle of the other George) or that he was a nephew. The spelling of George's surname varied from time to time: Higirty, Higarthy, Higerty, Hegerty, Hegerthy, Haggerty and Haggerty.

The names of the children of George suggest they are members of the same Haggerty family that came to Canada and the USA in the 1820s. In particular, the name Marmaduke is thought to be a marker for this family. Records for this family reveal the shocking rate of infant and child mortality in 18th century Cork. None of the first 8 children born to this couple survived childhood.
