Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1840
  • Death: June 1868; Gloucester County, New Brunswick
  • Note: From http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/NewspaperVitalStats (Daniel F Johnson : Volume 26 Number 1094)
June 27, 1868, Chatham The Gleaner and Northumberland Schediasma (newspaper entry transcribed by Daniel F. Johnson).
"Two miles this side of Bathurst (Glouc. Co.) there resides a farmer, Robert GOOD. It appears that on the 13th of this month this man and his wife, who were in the habit of quarelling, disagreed about some family matter. He then beat and abused her so much that the same night she left her home and for several days she was missing. The country around was alarmed and made diligent search was made for her. On Monday 22nd inst her body was found floating in the big Nepisiguit below the Bridge with a great many marks of violence upon it. Since the above has been in type, we learn by telegraph that the husband and a girl named PATERSON, who was a servant in the house have been arrested for the murder. (see original)"
Further, again again transcribed by Daniel F Johnson : Volume 26 Number 2085:
July 2, 1868 Saint John, The Morning Freeman
"An inquest was held at Bathurst (Glouc. Co.) 22nd inst., on view of the body of Catherine wife of Robert GOOD, farmer, residing near Miramichi Road about two miles from the town of Bathurst. The deceased had been missing from her home since the night of 13th inst. The neighbors and people generally made a thorough search up to the day of the 22nd inst. when the remains of the unfortunate woman were seen floating in the river near the shipyard of John E. O'BRIEN, Esq. A post mortem examination was made by Dr. GORDON and the Jury, after a painful and protracted investigation which occupied three days on the 25th inst., found a verdict of wilful murder against Robert GOOD, the husband of the deceased and against Rachael PATTERSON, a girl living as a servant in the house for aiding and abbetting the husband in the foul deed."
My informant on this information indicated she had not found anything about the trial of Rachel, but Robert was tried and acquitted. Folklore was that he was such a foul character that the witnesses were intimidated about testifying against him.
