Parents
Biography
- Birth: 1847; New Brunswick (Canada)
- Note: Samuel remained living with his parents until 1881 census. In 1891 he was still in Douglas, living alone. In 1901 there is a Samuel Seymour, alleged birth date 26 April 1850, with wife Bertha born 13 April 1874, and 3 children, aged 2 to 7. Must be the same Samuel as the neighbours are the same as those in 1891--birth year thus must be mistaken.

Dr. William Clarke

Parents
Biography
- Birth: Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
- Christening: 30 December 1810; Coolbanagher Parish, Queen's County, Ireland
- Death: 7 October 1887; Wellington County, Ontario
- Burial: Woodlawn Cem., Guelph, Ontario
- Note: All Canadian records which provide information on his age would have William born in 1813. For example, according to Chadwick (1895, p. 86), William was born in 1813 in Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland. However, the baptism record indicates he was born no later than 1810. For some time I was uncertain that this William was a son of Thomas Clarke and Elizabeth Wilkinson. Family stories were that Laura Secord (nee Ingersoll) was related to the James Clarke family. This would only be possible if William were a relative as he was married to Laura's daughter, also named Laura. William assisted James Clarke in obtaining a mortgage on his farm in 1865. In 2004 I finally found an obituary for one of James Clarke's sons which confirmed that William was his uncle.
William Clarke was a physician. The book by Canniff, "The Medical Profession in Upper Canada," notes: "Was a native of Maryborough, Queen's Co., Ireland and became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, 1836. Coming to Canada, he passed the Upper Canada Medical Board, 1839." (p. 296). The website of the Royal College of Surgeons has posted old membership rolls, and we find Wm. Clarke of Guelph, Ontario, Canada was licensed in June, 1835. He held several positions of public service, including: Commissioner of the Court of Requests in 1833, Warden of Wellington County 1852, M.P. 1853 to 1863 and Mayor of Guelph 1864/65. He also took a leading part in procuring the incorporation of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and served as its president for six years. I have yet to find any record of him in Ireland.
"The History of Guelph: 1827 - 1927" by Leo Johnson and published by the Gueph Historical Society in 1931 has several references to William. This book can be readily accessed online at the University of Calgary website and is searchable. See: http://www.ourroots.ca/e/index.aspx (I found it by using the advanced search and entered the title "History of Guelph" in the first line and "1827" in the second). On page 118 is found the story of why he left Ireland. Note that again his birth year is mistakenly given as 1813.
In 1861 William is listed as age 49. He and his second wife, Clara, are living in a three storey stone house in Guelph. His occupation is Doctor of Medicine. Others in the single family household are: Bleecker Powell 17 (son of Clara); "Flora" Clarke 14; Rosa Clarke 3; Lionel Clarke 2; and 5 servants. All of the children were born in Upper Canada.
In 1871 we find William 60, Clara 45, Laura 23, Rosa 13, Lionel 12, "Harvey" 8 and Blecker Powell 23, law student.
In the 1881 census William was listed as a widower and was living with his two sons, daughter and son-in-law and their son, as well as with four other apparently unrelated people, in Palmerston, Ontario:

Death reg'n #18369: age 74, cause of death heart disease; informant J. B.? Powell. Photo of tombstone online at: says age 74 when he died. Funeral report from an unidentified newspaper indicates the chief mourners were his son L.H. Clarke, step-son J.B. Powell and cousin Esmonde L. Clarke (grandson of George and Esther Clarke of Ireland).
- Note: Clara Pigott Strange; Marriage notice in the "Tri Weekly Advisor" of 7 Nov. 1855, indexed on OGS website (newspaper held at Guelph Public Libary), notes bride's name as "Mrs. Clara Pigot," but also says her "surname" (presumably her maiden name?) was Powell.

William Lionel Herbert (Lionel) Clarke
M, #7170, b. 20 July 1859, d. 29 August 1921
Parents
Biography
- Birth: 20 July 1859; Ontario
- Death: 29 August 1921; Toronto, Ontario
- Burial: 31 August 1921; Toronto
- Note: Very little is known of this man although he served as Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario from 1919 to 1921. He died of stomach cancer while serving in that office (death reg'n #5484). A now-dead website on Ontario Lieutenant Governors noted:
"The Honourable Lionel Herbert Clarke (1859-1921): Lionel Clarke was born in 1857 in Guelph, the son of a doctor. He was educated at Trinity College School and the University of Edinburgh. In 1891 he married Anne Small. Clarke was a businessman in Palmerston before entering the grain trade in Toronto. He became the Chairman of Canadian Malting Company, President of the Board of Grain Supervisors, Chairman of the Toronto Harbour Commission, and a member of the Niagara Falls Park Commission. Clarke was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in 1919 and was a champion for public education and literacy. He died in Office in 1921."
Correspondance in the possession of the family reveals that Lionel was sent to Edinborough, Scotland to learn the brewery business. In 1895 he formed a malt dealership with Wilmot Matthews (L. H. Clarke and Company); five years later the two also set up the Canada Malting Company Limited, apparently in Toronto.
His marriage registration records his name as William Lionel Clarke. In the 1901 census he is Lionel H. Clarke, living in Toronto and his occupation is "Partner Malster." In later records he is also listed as Lionel H. Clarke. He was living in Kingston, Ontario in 1899 when he registered the birth of his son Eric. Other than his death registration, the last firm record I can find for him is when he registered the birth of his daughter Clara in March 1918. In 1911 census they are listed only by their initials, and are residing at 49 St George, Toronto. In 1894 his address was 4 Spadina Road, Toronto; in 1905 it was 63 Isabella St., Toronto; and in 1918 he was at 6 Clarendon Crescent, Toronto. These folks surely did move around a lot!
Lionel, age 51, and his family Annie 40, Diana 14, Esmonde 18, Eric 12 and Douglas 6, sailed from Liverpool to Quebec City on the Megantic, arriving 3 June 1912.
His death is registered under the name Herbert Lionel Clarke (reg'n #5484). Born 20 Jul 1859, age 62 years, 1 mos, 9 days; cause of death carcinoma stomach; informant Col. Alex Fraser, also of Government House.
There are two photos of him posted on the Toronto Public Library website:
