Parents
Biography
- Birth: About 1714; Cortland Manor, Westchester County, New York
- Christening: 2 April 1714; Dutch Reformed Church, New York City
- Note: "Baptisms at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam (1639-1730): 21 April 1714; Engel Hoff, Maria Willems; Willem; Gidion Castang, Diana Cornelus" I assume these names refer to father, mother; child; sponsors.
According to Trigg (1992), in 1775 Willem, William Jr. and Solomon Huff appear on the Assessor's List for District No. 10, Orange County, New York. William Huff and William and Solomon Hoff were among the signers of the Pledge of Association for the Blooming Grove District, Precinct of Goshen, Orange County.
"In the fall of 1783, a sizable party of New Yorkers under the leadership of Major Peter Van Alstyne, sometime of Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York, sailed from New York City, bound for Canada. Among them were Paul, Angle, William (presumably the father), and John Huff. By the time they had to halt for the winter, they had reached the settlement of Sorel, present Richelieu County, Quebec, about three quarters of the distance from the city of Quebec to Montreal. There they camped for the winter, and built batteaux to continue the journey. Meanwhile, the authorities had determined to grant them land west of Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario, in a township then known as Fourth Town. The party left Sorel on 21 May 1784. . . The party under Van Alstyne entered [the Bay of Quinte] and, on 16 June 1784, landed . . . in what would become the township of Adolphustown, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario."
