George was the only son of Bartholomew Hounsfield of Clough House, Sheffield, and Elizabeth Gregory. He was on the Board of the Midland Railway, and chairman of the Sheffield Water Company. His will expressed the desire that £20,000 of his fortune should be applied in pensions of £30 to persons in reduced circumstance.3,4

William OVEREND, Q.C.1

Biography

William OVEREND, Q.C., was born on 31 May 1809 in Sheffield.2 He and Maria SCHOLEFIELD were married on 22 August 1871 in Paddington.1 He died on 24 December 1884, at age 75, in West Retford House.3
William Overend was the son of Hall Overend and Ruth Wilson. He was educated at Sheffield Grammar School, and afterwards at Hamburg where he went to learn the German language. His legal education was received at Leeds and London, and after studying physical sciences at Paris he spent two years travelling in Italy, Egypt, Arabia, the Holy Land, Turkey, Russia, and Sweden. He was called to the Bar in 1837 and in 1856 was made a Q.C. He was unsuccessful in contesting the Borough of Sheffield as a Conservative in the elections of 1852 and 1857. He was returned as M.P. for Pontefract in 1859, but had to resign when bribery committed by his agent was proven. He contested Derby in 1868, being beaten by a small majority. In 1864 he sat as chairman of the Inundation Commission assessing damages that resulted from the bursting of the Dale Dyke dam. He gave up his profession in 1870 on account of his increasing deafness.4,2

Thomas Robert Eaton Wybault WARREN-SWETTENHAM was born in October 1867. He and Emmete Florence COPE were married in 1907.1 He died in 1915, at age ~48.2
Thomas Robert Eaton Wybault Warren-Swettenham was the eldest son of Colonel Robert Warren-Swettenham, of Swettenham Hall, Cheshire. His military career began in the West India Regiment in 1889, and four years later he transferred to the East Yorkshire Regiment, becoming captain in 1899 and major in 1910. He saw active service in South Africa in 1902, taking part in the operations in the Orange River Colony, and receiving the Queen’s medal with two clasps.

Sarah CARTER was born about 1767 in Stapleton, Herefordshire. She died on 21 May 1861, at age ~94, in Maulden, Bedfordshire.2
Sarah Carter was enumerated in the 1841 England census as the head of household at Hall End, Maulden, together with Mary Carter (aged 63), Clara Carter (aged 20) and a servant. She was enumerated in the same place in 1851, with her niece Clara Carter and a servant. Her reminiscences of the Meredith family are contained in a note from 11 Aug 1855 that is in a collection of family documents.3,1

In 1881 he was enumerated as a visitor (aged 19, unmarried, a farmer’s son) in the household of Samuel Meredith at Hoopits Farm, Burford, Shropshire. In 1891 he was in the household of Margaret Tooby (farmer, widow, aged 45 - his future wife) at Brainge Farm, Putley, Herefordshire, and was described as farm manager, aged 34, single. In the 1901 census he was enumerated as the head of household and farmer, aged 37, at Brainge Farm, with Margaret (wife, 54), Margaret Ida Meredith (daughter, 9), Ernest J. Tooby (step-son, 22), Hubert T. Tooby (step-son, 17), and 4 farm labourers.1
