Hon. Richard Martin Meredith

  • Note: Armstrong notes: Richard Martin (1847-1934) studied law with Edmund and then became his partner, specializing in chancery law. He was appointed a judge of the Chancery Division of the High Court of Ontario in 1890. In 1905 he became a judge of the Court of Appeal, in 1912 chief justice of the Common Pleas, and finally from 1922 onward until he retired in 1930 president of the High Court. He was a also chancellor of "Western University" (now the University of Western Ontario) from 1912 to 1916. Richard never married, and he died in 1934, leaving an estate of $235,598. (p. 176)

Thomas Graves Meredith

  • Note: Thomas Graves Meredith passed the matriculation examination at the University of Toronto, but did not enter the university as a student. Instead of doing so, he entered the office of Scatcherd & Meredith as a law student, and five years later, in 1877, he was admitted as a solicitor. He was called to the bar in the year 1895, Mr. Meredith was appointed as solicitor for the City of London and he held that office until his death. He was created a King's Counsel in 1902. He married Miss Jessie Carling, third daughter of Sir John Carling [i.e., Carling's Brewery], in 1882. He left two sons, Stanley and Redmond, both of whom are in business in this city (excerpted from obituary in the London Free Press, 29 October 1945).

Charles Meredith

  • Note: Charles was referred to as a "prominent financier" in the obituary for his brother Thomas. Armstrong (1986) notes: Charles (1855-1928) also went to Montreal and married a daughter of Richard B. Angus. . . In 1887 he purchased a seat on the Montreal Stock Exchange, of which he was president from 1902 to 1905, and retired because of ill health in 1924. (p. 177)
    In 1901 Charles' occupation was listed as broker. His birth year on the census was 1855. He and his wife lived in Montreal and were reported to have 4 servants: a table maid, house maid, groom and maid. They had no children. They lived at 1130 Pine Avenue, next to his brother, in a home now part of McGill University (see http://cac.mcgill.ca/campus/Buildings/Charles_Meredith_House.html). In 1911 they lived on Pine Avenue West (looks like 138, but note reference below to 538?) and employed six servants. They appear in the 1920 USA census in Santa Barbara California, lodgers at the El Mirasol Hotel, January 30. Both are recorded as aliens; Charles arrived in the US in 1920, Elspeth (listed as Elizabeth) arrived in 1919.

    Meredith, Charles, bond and stock broker, and financial agent. Brother of Chief Justice Sir William Ralph Meredith, and son of the late John Cook Meredith and Sarah Pegler, he was born and educated in London, Ontario. In June, 1893 he married Elspeth Hudson Angus, daughter of R.B. Angus of Montreal.
    Acquired business experience in service at the Bank of Montreal. Joined the Montreal Stock Exchange in 1887 and was president from 1902-1905. Head of the firm Charles Meredith & Co., stock brokers, and president of Charles Merideth & Co., bond brokers and financial agents, Montreal. Vice-President of Hillcrest Colleries Ltd., 1910; a director of the British and Colonial Press Services; a member of the Board of Arbitration and the Montreal Board of Trade; a director of the Quebec fish and Game Association, and the Montreal Parks and Playgrounds Association.
    In his youth he was a noted athlete.

  • Note: Little is written about Llewellyn. In 1881 he was listed as a law student. In the London City Directories he was said to be in real estate. Obituaries for his more famous brothers name him, but do not indicate his profession (whereas they do list professions and accomplishments of all of the other men in the family). Armstrong simply notes: Llewellyn (1861-1933) was a London real estate agent. (p. 176)

Sir Henry Vincent Meredith

  • Note: Henry Vincent Meredith entered the Bank of Montreal at London as a junior clerk, but he gained rapid promotion and finished his career as the president of the bank. In recognition of the eminence in the financial world, he was created a baronet, an unusual distinction in Canada (from obituary for his brother, London Free Press, 1945)
    In 1881 he was living with his parents in London and his occupation was bank inspector. In 1901 Vincent and his wife were living in Montreal, along with 5 servants: a parlor maid, cook, kitchen maid, house [sic] and ladies maid.
    Armstrong (1986) notes: The dominant figure among those brothers who went into business was Henry Vincent (1850-1929), who married a daughter of Andrew Allan of the Allan Line of steamships. Joining the Bank of Montreal in 1867, he rose to general manager of the bank by 1911, was president from 1913 to 1927, and then chairman. He was also president of the Royal Trust Company and the Royal Victoria Hospital. He received a baronetcy in 1916, becoming Sir Vincent. He left an estate of well over a half-million dollars (pp. 176-177). There were no children.
    Vincent succeed R B Angus (father-in-law of Vincent's brother Charles) as president of the Bank of Montreal

Edmund Mansell Meredith

  • Note: Enlisted in the Canadian military 10 Feb. 1916, in London, ON. His father Edmund Sr. of 504 Colborne St, London, was named as his next of kin. Said to be unmarried? and his 1918 marriage registration to Olive Varcoe indicates he was a bachelor. Perhaps the first marriage to Rachel was annulled?
    USA Immigration Records (ancesty.com) Edmund, age 32, and his wife Rachel, age 21, entered the USA in Detroit 7 January 1911. At the time he was said to have been a resident of Detroit since 1907. His occupation was "Bookpr." He was 5', 8 1/2" tall, had brown hair, blue eyes and a ruddy complexion.
    Edmund was said to be living in Toronto when his father died in 1921 (Clarke, 1978). Clarke also indicated that Edmund died in Chicago. An online search of Illinois death records confirmed that he died in Chicago; death certificate #6023604 was issued in Cook County, Illinois.

  • Note: Olive Lillian Varcoe; Ontario marriage reg'n #2777: Both were residents of Toronto when they married; witnesses Margaret Sanderson and Isabella Patterson, both of Toronto.
