F, #20726, b. 24 December 1824, d. 4 March 1920

Biography

  • Birth: 24 December 1824; Ireland
  • Marriage: 23 October 1852; William Haggerty; St Lukes Episcopal Church, Rochester
  • Death: 4 March 1920; Marshall, Missouri

    Obit posted on ancestry:
There is a reaper whose name is Death
    And with his sickle keen,
He reaps the bearded grain at a breath
And the flowers that grow between.
This time he has chosen a grand old poineer settler of Lafayette county, Mrs. Jane Hagerty who was born in County Cork, Ireland and had nearly reached the centenarian age, came to america when about eight years old, living in Rochester, N.Y., for a few years. She was married to the late Wm. Hagerty in 1845 and came to Missouri in a early day when the modes of living were very different from our modern twentieth century. Her husband, who was a railroad contractor, having been killed during the war, left the entire responsibility of rearing a family of small children, on the mother. But she was always equal to every occasion, meeting obstacles and bearing up under difficulties as only those can who place their trust in Him who is ever ready to help those who are heavy laden. And even "as she walked through the valley of the shadow of death, she displayed the same remarkable strength of character and courage as marked her during her life. She was an unusually shrewd business woman, having retained a wonderfully clear memory even in her old age.
Her long and worthwhile life of service was always dedicated to the higher, better things of this life. Her one mission was that of helping the sick and sorrowing over the rough and rugged paths of this earthly existence. Nothing ever hindered her in these errands of mercy and many homes in Lafayette county have known and felt the influence of her self sacrifice, and interest in those who needed her. This is truly a community sorrow, for Grandma Hagerty (as she was known to all by this name) had a place in so many hearts outside of the relatives. The children who mourn her death are: Mrs. H. T. Shaw of Denison, Texas, Mrs. M. W. Summers, Mrs. G. W. King of Alma and one son, John Hagerty, Concordia; twenty-one grand children and twenty-one great grand children. Her grandsons acted as pall bearers and she was laid to rest in Lexington cemetery with her husband and son. The wealth of exquisite flowers are always sweet messengers of solace and comfort to the sorrowing ones of earth.
We would not call you back, mother, to this world of strife and care,
For we know your home in heaven awaits our coming to you there.
