George Tanner

M, #19341, b. about 1802, d. 19 November 1871

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1802; Ireland
  • Death: 19 November 1871; New York
  • Burial: 21 November 1871; Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester NY
  • Note: Not documented that George was a son of Richard and brother of Edward; however, the fact that, like Edward, he was living in Rochester NY, and the naming patterns of their children, suggest that George and Edward were either brothers or uncle and nephew. George was listed in the 1840 census with his wife and 7 children in Rochester, NY. In 1850 he was 42 and a cartman; he was listed as 60 in 1860 and 65 in 1870. 1865 state census gives estimated birth 1807. Not recorded in 1880 census. Cemetery register gives cause of death "Infl. of stomach", age 69, res. Atkinson St., Rochester.
St Luke's parish register indicated they lived on Atkinson Street--date probably 1847/48; their children were listed as Richard, George, William, Edward and Elizabeth.
    : recorded from tombstone: George; d Nov 19, 1871 aged 69y 8m
In 1850 George's three eldest sons were said to have been born in Nova Scotia. A search of both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick vital records in June 2013 was unsuccessful. Thus given birth places of children, it appears George moved to Nova Scotia (now part of Canada) before 1830, then on to Rochester NY before 1840.

Biography

  • Birth: August 1869; Maryland, USA
  • Note: Middle initial appears to be either I or J, but ancestry transcribed it as a C! All three of her children were still living in 1900, but in 1910 she reported that 4 of 6 children were still living. In 1940 Grace was a widow living with her son Robert and his family.

Catherine Williamson

F, #19349, b. about 1803, d. 15 August 1878

Biography

  • Birth: About 1803; Ireland
  • Marriage: 1826; George Tanner; Diocese of Cork and Ross, County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 15 August 1878; New York
  • Burial: 17 August 1878; Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester NY
  • Note: MLB shows an 1826 marriage between George Tanner and Catherine Williamson-must be this couple as found the following: 1847 Communicants included "Cath (Williamson) Tanner," image 159 of 266
same listing in vol 3 register, image 84 of 124--seems to indicate she became a member/communicant in 1847?
Catherine was listed as 42 in 1850, 57 in 1860 and 63 in 1870. The 1879 Rochester city Directory shows Catherine Tanner died 15 August 1878--from tombstone >: Catherine, wife of George; d Aug 15, 1878 aged 75y 5m

Richard Tanner

M, #19350

Parents

Biography

  • Christening: 14 April 1828; Nova Scotia
  • Note: From Dave Tanner:
'BAPT: Apr 14 1828 as Richard Tanner/Turner of George & Catherine, farmer of Upper Rawdon, Hants Co., N.S. (Anglican)'
St Luke's parish register lists a Richard Tanner confirmed Dec. 1850, probably this man: Image 90
Listed as age 20 in 1850; 28 in 1860, 37 in 1870. In 1880 he was a widower living with his niece or nephew (Jacob and Catherine Teall) in Rochester, age 47, carpenter. Also in 1880 is a Richard Tanner, a widower, formerly a labourer, age 48, who was an inmate in the almshouse in New Haven Connecticut? In 1900 Richard was a widower, had been married 2 years (suggests his wife died 2 years after they married?) and he was living with his brother Edward and sister Elizabeth Williamson, said to have been born in New York.
Found an 1854 baptism which seems likely to be for a child of this Richard and wife Elizabeth.
  • Note: Elizabeth Knowles; Marriage record in St Luke's register, image 106 of 136: ; witnesses were John Knowles, Thomas Knowles, George Tanner and others.
Both were residents of Rochester when they married.

Family: Elizabeth Knowles (b. 26 May 1830, d. 1855)
