William Hegarty

M, #19788, b. before 1790, d. perhaps 7 Oct 1863

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: Before 1790; Ireland
  • Marriage: 1810; Susanna Lannin; Diocese of Cork and Ross, County Cork.
  • Death: Perhaps 7 Oct 1863; Ireland
  • Note: Living in Abbeystrowry parish in the early 1800s--records include C of I baptisms of his children; townland not stated; listing in the Tithes and Griffiths in Smorane townland, and marriages for two children naming their father as William, a farmer. It is Possible that I am combining records for more than one William Hegarty, but I think it unlikely. William is also listed on the 1831 Tirthes Defaulters list.
Was thought he might be the W. Hegarty buried in Abbeymahon Cemetery in Skibbereen-"Sacred to the Memory of W. Hegarty who died Oct 7th 1863 aged 67 years Erected by his son John":
    http://www.graveyards.skibbheritage.com/Gravestone.aspx?GravestoneID=624
However, seems unlikely that such a man could have married in 1810? He would only have been 14 if the cemetery age is correct.

Henry Heagarty

M, #19789, b. about 1815, d. 1865

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1815; Ireland
  • Marriage: 4 February 1845; Mary Swanton; Abbeystrowry parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Marriage: 19 December 1850; Mary Sullivan; Abbeystrowry parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 1865; Skibbereen, County Cork
  • Note: Living in Abbeystrowry parish in the mid 1800s. There were two marriages for Henry, both of them to women named Mary, making it a bit confusing. However, in both cases he signed the register with an X and his occupation was shoemaker. As well, there is a gap in the birth dates of the children that is consistent with the first Mary dying after Catherine's birth, and Henry then remarrying. The 1850 marriage record says Henry was of Bridgetown, Skibbereen, and his father, James, was a farmer.
Baptisms for Henry and Mary's children place them in the town of Skibbereen: on Castletownsend Road in 1846, 1858 and 1860; Mardyke [St] in 1851; New Road in 1854 and 1862; Newsouch (this must not be right?) in 1856; and Townsend Street in 1864.
Death reg'n Skibbereen district 1865, age 50 (V 10, p 425). I wonder what happened to the widow and children?
  • Note: Mary Swanton; Both Henry and Mary signed the register with an X.
  • Note: Mary Sullivan; Married by banns.

Family 1: Mary Swanton (b. before 1830)

Family 2: Mary Sullivan (b. about 1828)

  • Note: Living in Smorane, Abbeystrowry parish in the mid 1800s and in both 1901 and 1911 censuses. An obituary for Rev James Canon Goodman, Rector, Abbeystrewry Parish, Skibbereen was published in The Southern Star, Saturday, January 25th 1896, and listed George Hegarty of Smorane as among those in attendance.

Daniel Hegarty

M, #19792, b. about 1855

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1855; Ireland
  • Marriage: About 1876; Mary; County Cork, Ireland
  • Note: Lived in Lissanoohig, Abbeystrowry parish. Baptism records for 2 eldest children were in the Schull parish register. The Abbeystrowry register also has the 2nd chlld, as well as all additional children. Daniel's age given as 44 in 1901 and 56 in 1911 censuses.
  • Note: Mary; Skibbereen marriage reg'ns for Daniel Hegarty were 1871, 1876, 1876, 1878, 1941. There were 57 Marys whose marriages were registered in Skibbereen in 1876--two of them were listed on the same pages as the two for Daniels in 1876: one was Mary Collins; the other Mary "Daily." 1911 census says they had then been married for 31 years--doesn't seem as if that could be correct?
