Daniel Heagerty

M, #19726, b. about 1795, d. before 1866

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1795; Ireland
  • Marriage: 1827; Anne Browne; Diocese of Cork and Ross, Ireland
  • Death: Before 1866; Passage West, County Cork
  • Burial: St Mary's C of I, Passage West, County Cork
  • Note: Daniel's son Henry is said to have been born in Clonakilty in 1829. The Pigot & Co’s Provincial Directory, 1824 for Clonakilty shows a Daniel Heagerty, Linen Draper, on Main St. This may be the same Daniel. There is also a Henry Hegarty, Corn Merchant/Miller, on Lisse Lane. Given that Daniel had a son Henry, this 1824 Henry may have been the same family.
1846 Slater's Directory for "Passage and Monkstown" shows Daniel Hegarty as pawnbroker; also a Jane Hegarty as one of the "shopkeepers and dealers in sundries".
The 1856 Slater's Directory for Cork city also has a Daniel Hegarty, pawnbroker.
However, HENRY & COGHLAN’S GENERAL DIRECTORY OF CORK FOR 1867 also shows Daniel as pawnbroker in Passage, suggesting the Cork city man might be a different Daniel? Also in Passage is Mrs. M. Hegarty, spirit dealer, both Hegartys of Strand Street.
Father of Eliza Jane Hegarty who was married in Marmullane (Passage West), 1850, age 18.

    From:
HEGARTY, Martha Miss "dau of late D"; ; Passage West COR IRL; Cork Examiner; 1866-1-4; indicating Daniel had died before his daughter Martha. However, the Cork Wills index (FamilySearch.org) records probate granted 18 May 1880, beneficiary William Browne Heagerty. Death registered 2nd qtr, 1880, Cork district, age 85.
Dan Hegarty of Passage West sat on a jury Dec. 1862; a Daniel was active in an effort to re-establish a market in Passage West in 1878--must have been the son? Joseph Mintern and H. Brown were also involved.

Another very interesting item, which may have referred to a grandson? If so, must have been son of Henry?
The Cork Examiner, 11 February 1864: INQUEST.
AN inquest was held yesterday at the Court-house, Passage, before Messrs. Stamers and Cronin, R.M., (the Coroner for the district not having been elected yet) upon the body of Charles Harding, master of the ship Anna Dorothea, who was killed in the Royal Victoria dockyard on last Monday by a heavy piece of timber falling upon him. The inquiry excited a good deal of interest in Passage, as two lads employed in the dockyard, through whose negligence the accident was alleged to have occurred, had been taken into custody by the police. It will be remembered that the deceased was killed by what is called a “shore” falling over the side of the dock in which his ship was being repaired and striking him on the head as he was coming up the steps out of the dock. The lads in custody, named Bernard and Hegarty, had charge of the timber at the time, and were taking it into the dock. . . . After a short consultation the jury found, by a majority, a verdict of accidental death, and the prisoners were discharged from custody.

The Cork Examiner, 7 April 1847 CORK SPRING ASSIZES-1847: CITY COURT—MONDAY. CITY CRIMINAL CASES.
A Clerk in the employment of Mr. Hegarty, Pawnbroker, deposed that on the 28th of January a woman, whom he identified as one of the female prisoners, Julia Morrissy, [sic] came into the office and offered him a piece of cloth ; he asked her where she got it, and finally stopped the cloth, and handed her over to the custody of Constable Graham.
Constable Graham deposed to having arrested the prisoner Julia Morrissy, and having searched her house, where he found three pieces of cloth ; one of which on being compared with the piece offered at Mr. Hegarty's appeared to be that from which the latter piece had been cut. When she was arrested, she gave her name as Julia Morrissy ; he had also found £4 10s in money in a box in the prisoner's house ; witness got two pieces of cloth from Mr. Thornhill, Pawnbroker, which Mr. O'Callaghan indentified at the station house.

George (of Derryconnell) Hagerty

M, #19745, b. before 1830

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: Before 1830; Ireland
  • Note: This may be the same George as is also shown with a wife Sarah--I suspect the clerk recorded the wrong name for the wife, confusing Sarah and Susan? Given this is the odd one out, I think it most likely that the correct name was Sarah.

Daniel (of Derryconnell) Hagerty

M, #19746, b. about 1799, d. about 1886

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1799; County Cork, Ireland
  • Marriage: About 1848; Avis
  • Death: About 1886; County Cork, Ireland
  • Note: Tithes Applotments (1827) show a Daniel in Derryconnell, Skull. In the 1853 Griffiths there were at least two Daniels, one Daniel Sr., one Daniel Jr. Daniel Sr. occupied a house only, and his immediate lessor was Daniel Jr. There was also a George Hegarty. All are occuping sub blocks of block 1.
I think Daniel Sr. must have been the father or brother of the other Derryconnell Hagertys: James, wife Catherine (and who does not appear in the Griffiths, suggesting he died before 1853?); William, wife Mary (also not listed in Griffiths, but had evidently emigrated to Canada by then); George, wife probably Sarah; and Daniel, wife Avis/Avisia.
Probably the Daniel whose death was reg'd Skull 4th qtr, 1886, age 87.

Family: Avis (b. about 1798, d. 1870)

John (of Derrycarhoon) Hegarty

M, #19747, b. about 1840

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1840; County Cork, Ireland
  • Note: 1901 census shows John as being 60; in 1911 he is 75! He was not able to read or write. Impossible to work out death date--too many Johns!
I'm a tad uneasy about who this man was. William and Mary Hagerty of Derryconnell had a son John baptised March 1842, who I originally thought should be this man. However, this John clearly remained in Ireland, and he and his wife Diana are in both the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses. There is pretty good evidence that these were the John and Mary emigrated to Canada abt 1846, and their son John was also this same age in Canadian records.
  • Note: Diana Levis; Marriage registered 1869, Skull district, V 3, p 700.
