Benjamin Tanner

M, #20889, b. about 1797, d. before 1881

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1797; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: Before 1881; Nova Scotia
  • Note: A baptism record for one of the children indicates this family lived in Mayfield. The family is listed on the 1834 Protestant census for Ballymodan parish, with 4 children, Henry 10, Thomas 8, Jonathan 6 and Eliza 4. The record notes that Benjamin was "gone". I am confident this is the Benjamin Tanner who emigrated to Nova Scotia and lived in Pictou county there, so I am combining the records from both locations. The Irish records are from an Anglican church, although this could be solely because it was the state church in Ireland at the time. Benjamin's wife was definitely Catholic and the stated religion for the children in Nova Scotia was Catholic.
1861 census shows Benjamin's household consisted of 3 males and 7 females. In 1871 Benjamin was 74 years old, a farmer and a member of the Church of England.

Honora Hannah Dacey

F, #20890, b. about 1801, d. 19 February 1873

Biography

  • Birth: About 1801; Ireland
  • Death: 19 February 1873; Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada
  • Note: Irish records give name as Honora, but Nova Scotia census records list Benjamin's wife as Hannah, age 70 in 1871, religion Roman Catholic (as were all of their children listed in the household in NS). Death registration Hannah Tanner, nee Dacey; born Bandon, Ireland; age 70; cause of death paralysis; informant Benjamin Tanner. She is listed as "married", not a widow, suggesting Benjamin outlived her, although I couldn't find his death reg'n.
Death registration for daughter Mary lists her maiden name as Norah Dasy, presumably confirming that her name was originally Honora.
